PreSchool-Grade 3-- The oft-recounted story of Noah and the Flood is the backdrop for this refreshingly original explanation of why the Manx Cat has no tail. As the animals board the ark, Noah realizes the Manx Cat is missing. His calls for the runaway feline, but cannot be heard above the rising winds and increasing rain. One by one his sons add their voices, while the animals on board grow increasingly distressed. Just in time, Noah's wife shows the men the correct way to call a cat, and the bedraggled kitty enters the ark just as Noah is closing the door, snipping off its tail in the process. Stevens' expansive watercolors create dramatic tension by juxtaposing the growing storm with the anxious and skittish expressions of the animals. A different angle on an old familiar story. --Kathy Piehl, Mankato State University, MN
