I'll start off by admitting I'm a huge fan of this show and have been for years. I followed it religiously, know it like the back of my hand, followed all the inside information from all of those involved in its production. It may not be exactly a bragging point, but I consider myself a font of information on How I Met Your Mother, and I only say that so you know this review is not coming from a casual fan. As a die-hard follower, it's hard to give this a proper rating because Season 9 as a whole while it didn't do all that it could have with the material given it was still pretty good, and the series as a whole is excellent. But all of that is ruined in one episode when you get to the finale.

The finale is truly terrible. There's no sugarcoating that. It throws away everything you just watched because it literally ignores all the events and character development that occurred in Seasons 3-9. And that is, sadly, not an exaggeration. If I took that last episode seriously it would ruin the series for me. But the important thing to know is that the finale episode in question was written by one of the showrunners quite literally 8 years ago before any of these other seasons were even written or aired, and that showrunner didn't want the series to last beyond Season 2. The entire story he wanted to tell consisted of Season 1, Season 2, and then that finale episode he wrote way back at that time nearly a decade ago. He actually left a message on twitter saying he threw out every other How I Met Your Mother script except for the finale script that was saved on his computer all those years ago because that finale was the only thing that mattered to him (portions of it were actually filmed 8 years ago too). Of course the problem with that is the show didn't stop at Season 2.

2.0 out of 5 stars 5 star season dashed in three short minutes. April 1, 2014

*Spoilers. Do not read if you haven't watched the finale*

I've watched this show with my wife since the beginning. I'm not ashamed to say that I'm a really sensitive dood and that's why this show's premise sucked me right in. I love Love Stories, good ones at least (like The Notebook) and this was TV's ultimate TV romance. Jim and Pam from The Office is one of the only other ones that is quite as full circle and fulfilling.

Let me be clear on this. The first half of the season kind of dragged and was a bit slow, but it still had its great moments and it tied up some loose ends thankfully. Right after the atrocious rhyming episode, the show got back to its roots and was once again hilarious and charming all at once. The second half really made up for anything I didn't enjoy in the first half. In fact, it may contain some of the best episodes over these past three seasons. The highly emotional "How Your Mother Met Me" had me choked up moreso than any other episode in the show's long run. If you aren't at the brink of tears during her monologue, you don't have a heart. Bottom line.

I was so excited for Ted last night, I really was. The entire first 40 or so minutes of the episode did so much to tie up loose ends and give us an engaging picture of Ted and the Mother's life as well as that of the gang. I didn't really care either way that Barney and Robin split. Sure, they'd built up the wedding for so long you thought they'd end up together. It *is* a major slap in the face of their long romantic arc, but I can let it go because I didn't really care about them being together anyways. It was always Ted's story.

The only problem with this finale is the last three minutes. The story should have ended with, "And that, kids, is how I met your mother.

1.0 out of 5 stars The season itself was mediocre, but the finale.... April 4, 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video|Verified Purchase
The season dragged on with the wedding of Robin and Barney, but what really destroyed not just the season but the whole show was the writer's slap in the face to the fans.

***** Spoilers*******

The show is called How I Met Your Mother, not How I Met Your Mother, but loved Aunt Robin forever and still want to be with her. Or How Aunt Robin Married My Best Friend and Divorced him, and I snagged Her After Fantasizing About Her for 9 Years and Your Mother Conveniently Died.

The ending was forced. They say they planned it from the start, but the characters evolved over 9 years, and they no longer fit that ending. Robin and Ted were boring as a couple by then. Too much on and off again. Ted got everything he wanted, kids, Robin, thanks to his wife dying off. It was pathetic, and came across as a betrayal of Tracy. She was not just a plot device for the show, but she came across as a plot device in Ted's life, which he simply used to move forward rather than love and cherish. And with all that, the kids are excited and happy that Dad has always been in love with someone other than their mom and he should go for it? What kind of loyalty and feeling do they have for their mother, who appears in a quickie montage of the story.

The show should have ended under the umbrella. Anything after that was garbage, true garbage, foisted on the fandom and insulting them.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rushed off the screen... April 7, 2014

I have been watching HIMYM for years with my husband and we have been devoted fans. The show has had its ups and downs, but none more so than this final season. The seemingly endless stretch of episodes devoted Barney and Robin's wedding promised a satisfying end to the drag, but the actual finale was PATHETIC. It was almost as though they woke up and realized they only had 2 episodes left to finish their damn story. To go from dragging one weekend out into several episodes to cutting through several years in 22 minutes made the episode feel rushed and the emotions seem forced. If I could go back in time and un-see this episode I would do it, I would make myself stop at Barney and Robin's wedding.

Why would you drag this beautiful story of what Ted went through to meet his wife only to kill her off, alienate Robin from the rest of the group, and then reunite her with Ted after years of him telling this effed up story to his kids in the hopes of getting their approval of his love for their "Aunt" Robin? & why would you do that to Barney and Robin? What the hell is wrong with you people?? If I wanted to watch a show with an easy out for a crap ending I would watch the freakin Disney channel. If I ever meet the writers of this show, rest assured I will be kicking everyone in the shins.
