Book Description

April 1, 1998
This 262 page book covers all of the aspects of the Year 2000 dilemma from an AS/400 point of view. Editor Julie Ransom of IBM and AS/400 Press of AS/400 Magazine has assembled the best names in the industry to contribute their expertise to the journal. Rather than trying to collect bits of information from many sources like the web, magazine articles, and white papers, an AS/400 IT professional can use this book to get all the answers they need. It is the complete story. Key concepts that are covered in this book are: - How to prepare upper management for the financial and legal ramifications of Year 2000 readiness. - What are the critical issues that must be considered before selecting a strategy and why one strategy may not be appropriate for all of your applications and systems. - How to deal with important trading partners and customers. - What are the factors to consider when deciding between different conversion strategies such as windowing, using date data types, and date expansion. - What are the different types of Year 2000 tools and how can they help you in your strategy. - How you should decide who will do the project work and who will manage the project. - How to write an RFP for a replacement strategy and how to evaluate the responses. - What 5 issues to consider when planning for testing. - How to set up your test environment and generate test data. - What clean management is and why it is important. - What the sources for potential Year 2000 errors after are you have implemented your Year 2000 ready system. - What are the issues and strategies for System/36 shops. - What issues outside of IS might your company be vulnerable in.

Editorial Reviews

Review

AS/400 Press has published the definitive book on the Year 2000 as it pertains to the AS/400. IT professionals who have AS/400s will find this book to be invaluable as they plan and implement their Year 2000 strategy. Peter de Jager, International Year 2000 Speaker and Consultant

Perceptive and precise! After executing five AS/400 Year 2000 projects, I still gained valuable information from this book. The authors clearly demonstrate their knowledge of the AS/400, the Year 2000 issues, and the industry. Annette Deschene, IBM Corporation, AS/400 Year 2000 Consultant -- From the Publisher

Two-digit years are still used throughout the computer industry, and not only in applications, but also hardware, operating systems, and middleware. The technique is used on all brands of computers, from the smallest to the largest, and by all the computer manufacturers. And as computer chips have evolved and gotten smaller, it's even been embedded into devices other than computers. If you check out programming textbooks used in universities today, some still show examples using two-digit years. Surprisingly, the use of 2-digit years continues to be pervasive. Finally, however, the message is getting out. Today, it's difficult to pick up a newspaper or magazine and not see some article about the Year 2000 and the 2-digit date. The bad news is that some businesses think the problem won't affect them. In my opinion, it will affect all of us. Some businesses will be able to revert to manual business methods to compensate for this, but others won't. And even if 50 percent of companies can revert to manual methods, we'll still be impacted by the others that can't. I believe we'll see many businesses fail because of Year 2000 impacts on their operations. Last year, a business was sold to another company when it felt it couldn't get the business ready to handle dates correctly in time. Others are sure to follow suit. It's not only your own business that you need to be concerned with, but also others that you're dependent on, such as suppliers or the distributors of your product. Even if you can successfully handle dates correctly, are you sure all your trading partners can? If you're not sure about your trading partners' readiness, can you be confident your own business can successfully continue to operate? Anticipation for the new millennium is building. It's both an exciting and scary time, and it will open some doors and close others. But if you have all your ducks in a row, there's no reason you can't enjoy the dawning of the new millennium as the clock moves past midnight on December 31, 1999.
