5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Pre-school teachers, February 7, 1999
By A Customer
I am a Pre-K director and buy many children's books. This was terrific! The first few times I sang it to my students, and after hearing it several times, they enjoyed singing it with me. I had no idea a book could be so much fun! I came on line to find other books by this author and I will most certainly buy the others for our nursery school library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very intruging book for my 16 mo. old, June 14, 2002
By
"tripkelly2" (Bloomington, IL United States) - See all my reviews
We checked this book out from our Library and my 16 mo. old daughter loves it so much. Since we could only renew this book twice I had to buy our own copy. She loves to point out the fact that the dog is juggling in one picture. And she is so sad when the little boy discovers that the doggie is gone ("Some people stopped by and bought that dog for there very special young son. They wanted to thank him for all the nice things he had done.") but is elated when we turn the page and discover that the doggie is now his ("Oh what a surprise I never figured that lucking young boy would be me!")

5.0 out of 5 stars It has became our standard gift, March 8, 2007
We (my husband, my sons and myself) love this book a lot, the story is great (see the other review) and our sons love it when we sing it out. It has became our standard gift for babyshower and small kids' birthday parties, whenever we can.

We felt that this book deserve more "promotions" -- too few people heard of it. Too few bookstores have it in stock -- I could not buy as a gift if I forgot to order it ahead of time. This book deserve to be in every kid's bookshelves. This is the first time I ever write a review because 3 reviews are just too few. I am sure more would give it 5 stars if only they get access to this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Give to the world the best that you have..., November 25, 2003
and the best will come back to you." (Unknown)

A cute little boy wants a doggie but doesn't have enough money. He has saved some money but it isn't enough. (Oh! I wish there were more books on saving money! Kids need them.) The pet store owner shows him other pets he can afford but the boy's mind is made up. He goes home and has a lemonade stand but it rains and he catches cold and can't do anything to make money to buy that doggie in the window. In the meantime, his sister, mom and dad each have a need that he can fill with some of his money and he gladly does so without hesitation. At the end of the week, he counts the money in his piggy bank and realizes he can't afford the doggie. He accepts this (another great lesson for kids to learn--to accept when they can't have something) and goes to visit the doggie just to say, "Hello." How sweet.

Good things happen to that little boy, I think, for the rest of his life with such a kind, giving heart. Thanks, Iza for a very special story with lots of takeaway value.

Soar!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Book...Teaches so Much..., June 1, 2011

I'm a kindergarten teacher who has read hundreds of children's books. This book really touched me. It's illustrations are fabulous...the facial expessions are amazing. It's about a sweet boy who wants a puppy and ends up spending all his money on his family. So the parents buy him the puppy at the end and he's just amazed. Didn't even realize how kind and deserving he was. I recommend this book highly...actually, I recommend the author as well...have a bunch of other great books from her...but this is by far my children's and my favorite!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!, March 4, 2011
This review is from: How Much Is That Doggie in the Window? (Paperback)
I'd never seen or heard of this book until I stumbled upon it in a consignment sale. It's a wonderful story with adorable pictures! You can use it to teach the song, to teach perseverance, to teach the concept of giving without holding back, putting others first, etc. Or you can just use it for the beautiful little book it is.

I am truly glad I found this one - it's a keeper!

My son loves this book. It is one of the first ones that I have seen him actually identify with the story and be able to remember what is coming next. He wants to read it over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for read-alouds and sing-alongs!, February 10, 2009
My preschooler and I love Ms Trapani's books, and they are consistently requested for at bedtime. Ms Trapani has a gift for expanding well-known nursery rhymes, prolonging the joy of reading these familiar and much-loved verses. The best part is that not only can these verses be read out loud, but sung as well.

In "How Much is That Doggie in the Window?", Ms Trapani tells the story of young boy who yearns for a puppy he sees in the window of a pet store, and how he takes his piggy bank to the store only to find his funds are insufficient. The little boy refuses to give up, but a series of incidents occur which require him to spend all of his savings. Will he get his puppy? The ending is heartwarming indeed! The illustrations are in full-color and enhance the reading/singing experience. A definite keeper.

I heard this book read (acutally sung)out loud to a group of adults at a conference to promote reading for school-aged children. What you heard at the end were the "sniffs" of the teary-eyed audience members. Maybe, I'm just soft-hearted, but this book is a keeper! I purchased it to read at my 3rd grade daughter's "Mystery Reader" day. I'm sure that they will enjoy it as well.
