3.0 out of 5 stars How not to die
I love Dr. G. I enjoy her show very much. I was eager to read her book. I was a bit dissappointed in the book because most of the cases she talked about were featured on her show. I have seen every episode so the book was redundant. She did add some helpful health tips and there was some new stuff, so I don't regret reading it. I am glad I waited for the paperback.

This review is from: How Not to Die: Surprising Lessons from America's Favorite Medical Examiner (Paperback)
I wish that every physician would understand
the danger signals which lead to death. This book
contains extensive clinical experiences and
symptomatology which should never be ignored.

The author explains how dental bacteria can
enter into the bloodstream and kill a patient.
Untreated diabetes can lead to widespread organ
failure. Oral sex can lead to head/neck cancer.
The HPV vaccine can lower the risks of the head/neck cancer.

Changes in vision can precede strokes or bleeding
inside the eye. Confusion can result from a head
injury, low blood sugar or meningitis.

Patients should check for Board Certified physicians.
In addition, there are a host of actions to be taken
to promote good health; namely,

o BMI analysis and followup dieting
o stress reduction
o cultivation of gratefulness
o listen to your body
o use medications and vitamins as directed

This book has some excellent clinical advice for
patients everywhere. These are things that your
doctor may not tell you during a typical visit.

I would add to this book another important item.
Keep copies of your medical records for future
reference. You might be surprised to read the contents.

5.0 out of 5 stars A powerful survey of the unintentional ways we harm our bodies, December 17, 2009
This review is from: How Not to Die: Surprising Lessons from America's Favorite Medical Examiner (Paperback)
HOW NOT TO DIE: SURPRISING LESSONS FROM AMERICA'S FAVORITE MEDICAL EXAMINER provides a powerful survey of the unintentional ways we harm our bodies - and how to make better choices so we don't have to endure painful deaths. From why 'neat freaks' live longer and ways to stay safe during a lightning storm in a car to preventing deadly accidents, this uses anecdotes from the doctor's cases to provide a prescription for a long health life. Any general lending library will find this a fine pick.

I expected more from Dr. G. I think we can all say we know we should wear seat belts while riding in automobiles, etc. Too sappy for my tastes.

First off, I have never seen her show, but if you had I could see were the book would seem repetitive. She does a good job of explaining medical issues and gives you a case study that represents that topic. It is interesting, but a lot of the book is pretty much common sense.

I bought this for my husband because we are big fans of Dr. G. and it's a good book so far. I like the fact that the words are not too small to read and there are not hundreds of pages.

If you like Dr. G and want to know how not to die, this book is for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good accident-illness prevention guide, August 26, 2010

I enjoyed reading this book as much as I enjoy watching the TV show. Some of the cases Dr. G describes in her book appeared on TV, but she also includes other interesting cases as well as many details that cannot be shown on the screen. You will find in the book additional recommendations to avoid untimely death and bibliographic references. It can also be used as an accident-illness prevention guide worth to re-check from time to time.

This is a good book. I find that a lot of the information is just plain common sense. Some of her stories I had seen on her tv program but was interesting to read anyway. I like Dr. G and find her line of work very intriguing.
