The book offers a framework for individuals to build a personalized organizational system. After determining which organizational type you are and which productivity type you are, the book lays out a step-by-step process for building a system that works for you and you alone. Over time, the author gives you tips for fine tuning your system until it is running smoothly.

I found the tips and ideas very useful, though the book was clearly written before the advent of smartphones and many of the web-based luxuries we have today (e.g. Evernote, Dropbox, Pocket, etc.). The tone is very light and the author shows empathy and understanding for the chronically disorganized.

For adults with ADD/ADHD, I believe the framework offers a solution that is both practical and tailor-made to address some of the areas we tend to struggle with. What I found especially refreshing was that the other didn't give tips like "Make it fun!" for doing things you struggle completing (filing). Instead, there are practical tips for addressing it while we are doing other things (talking on the phone, for example) or waiting until we hit a filing mode (hyper focus) and just plowing through it. With some tweaking to include modern digital amenities, this framework shows a lot of promise.

Though painfully outdated, I found this book very helpful. The focus on the flow of paper, physical inboxes (that hold real paper on a desk), post-its and filing in actual cabinets required a lot of creativity to translate the core ideas to the modern world. For example, learning my access type is Visual and that "out of sight, out of mind" is a primary driver of disorganization for Visuals explained why everything being "hidden" somewhere on my computer/tablet/phone is challenging but offered no suggestions on how to help myself in the age of technology.

However, understanding where the bottlenecks can occur and how I can optimize for my personality and access type is something I've thought about frequently since I read the book. The unexpected bonus was applying what I learned to my team. I've made a number of changes on how we meet, track and follow up on projects that have had an impact on our productivity but an even greater effect on our team dynamic since I've augmented a systems to accommodate everyone's style and access type. These sections in the book are now required reading for all new employees.
