I do not know anything about painting and we just bought a house that needed new painting on the interior. I went to Walmart all eager to buy the parts I need for the task. Well, I was surprised to find out that there are things one needs to know than just picking color. Not only that, I was overwhelmed by which brush to pick. All I know is that I need a roller brush and a pan just like how I saw my father paint our house when I was a kid. And on top of that, I am on a budget for the painting. That's when I realized I need a book. And this book I would say is a great guide book for beginners. This book talks about all basic tools needed like blue tape, the kinds of brushes, paints (Gloss, Semi gloss, Flat) and all the other tools needed for prepping the the room to be painted. It also talks about where to start painting. After reading it, I went to Dollar tree store (it's like the 99c cents store in California) to get some of the tools I needed. I invested money on the brushes just like what this book said. I will definitely recommend this book if you do not know anything about painting your interior. I have not read about the exterior yet, but I am planning on painting that part of the house as well and I'm glad that this book also talks about that. If you are also a beginner, I would suggest you to read this book and then watch a youtube video on how to paint to give you an idea exactly how the painting itself should be done, since seeing it would help more than just reading it from a book. If not for the help this book gave me, my living room and bedroom will not be looking as nice as it does now and I didn't exceed my budget.

The book is easy to read, but the section on exterior paint leaves out some prep tips and time of day painting application information (varies by area). Good info, especially for beginners. I might add a couple of points:

Paint thinner: not needed with latex (water based) paint.

Cans hard to open? Metal cans open easily with an opener. If you have metal cans, several holes should be punched in the rim to allow paint to drip back into the can. When replacing the top, a rag should be placed over the can to avoid splattering. Today, many are twist off tops, so opening/closing is not an issue.

Skip the stir sticks...a $5 attachment to your cordless drill stirs paint faster/far better than a stir stick.

Paint brand doesn't matter? Even between name brand paints, brand DOES matter.

No mention of scaffolds: you can rent one with wheels at the rental store that saves tons of time over ladders (safer, too!)

BTW, your new home's walls sucked up paint because the new wall board obviously wasn't first sealed with new wallboard sealer: a white first coat that seals the drywall. And Bullseye or Killz will completely seal any stains - even fire damage!

The items mentioned in my first review have since been covered via a revision by the author. Even though I have automatic updates turned ON, my book still has the original pages, so the items I first mentioned are still an issue...but that's an Amazon issue, not the author's by any means.

If you've never painted before, this book is a good bet.

Something for most everyone and not over priced. I think you will find a tip or two in this that will help your DIY projects. Some of it simplistic I guess for you pros, but for those of us that do not paint routinely or for a living it has great advice to do a great job.
