Book Description

June 1, 2003 1571743634 978-1571743633 1

For Diane Goldner, what began as an investigative story for The New York Times, became a four-year pilgrimage into the thriving yet controversial world of energy healing in America. Her report, How People Heal, serves as both an introduction to this world, and an engrossing narrative featuring in-depth portraits of healers Barbara Brennan and Rosalyn Bruyere. Goldner spent hours alongside these spiritual and savvy women witnessing their healing work, while casting a critical eye at the business side of their organizations.

How People Heal also introduces you to physicists mapping the effects of love and desire across time and space, nurses using therapeutic touch on hospital patients, and heart surgeons using energy medicine in the operating room. Most important, you’ll meet Jonathan Kramer, Doris Dennard, Marilyn Schneider, and others like them, whose lives and life-threatening illnesses have been transformed by the work of energy healers.

How People Heal is the trade paper edition of the 1999 hardcover Infinite Grace: Where the Worlds of Science and Spiritual Healing Meet.

How People Heal takes you inside:

  • schools and institutions training energy healers
  • traditional hospitals and clinics integrating energy medicine into everyday practice
  • labs measuring the effects of energy and consciousness on healing
  • the hearts and minds of patients choosing to work with energy healers instead of conventional therapy

4.0 out of 5 stars A Question & Correction plus a Review, July 3, 2005
This review is from: How People Heal: Exploring the Scientific Basis of Subtle Energy in Healing (Paperback)
I am surprised that you are encouraging people to buy the two books, Infinite Grace and How People Heal--because these are, from what I can see, exactly the same book, with different titles. This is an excellent book; but I can imagine the frustrations of those who followed your suggestion!

As a teacher of Therapeutic Touch (developed by Dora Kunz and Dr. Dolores Krieger), I found this a fascinating read. I rank it with another book that was published around the same time as Infinite Grace, Afterwards You're a Genius by Chip Brown. For those of us who dwell in the realms addressed by the disciplines of "energy medicine," it is very helpful to have a body of literature about the various paths and personalities. I hope that books like these help people to realize that there are indeed many and varied disciplines under the energy medicine umbrella, and that it is as important to seek out the appropriate modality for each person as it would be to find the MD with the appropriate specialty for a physical issue.

I give the present title 4 stars because I don't agree that the subtitle "exploring the scientific basis of subtle energy in Healing" is truly applicable to this book. This claim would be more appropriate for a book like The Field by Lynn McTaggert. Julia Benkofsky-Webb, Hawaii, USA(under the member name, Garrett Webb)

This review is from: How People Heal: Exploring the Scientific Basis of Subtle Energy in Healing (Paperback)
I have never writtten a review of any of the many books I have read concerning energy and healing, however I feel very moved to write this one.

I have been a reiki practitioner for over 10 years and a massage therapist even longer. I have felt energy fields and have helped many to feel better and begin to heal themselves. I read this book with great interest and with great hope. I am fascinated by energy, spirituality, and how quantum physics is now bringing us full circle with science and creating a completely different way of looking at health and healing. For that aspect, I enjoyed reading much of this book. However, I do take issue with the idea that healers should be tested and verified, and that you cannot possibly be a legitimate healer without attending schools or spending many years of study (not to mention much $$$) with others who are so called experts.... putting such a 20th century medical stigma on a healing modality based on intention and love makes no sense to me. In my experience, the fact that one healer can see and observe the aura and another cannot does not determine their ability to fasciliate healing. Even with all the studies, we will never know exactly what makes a person able to heal, or why some people recover and others do not. What we need are more people open to the possibility that they can heal themselves or even others...not some sort of heirarchy of healing professionals that determine whether we are good enough or not.

For this reason, and it is a big one for me, I cannot recommend this book.

This review is from: How People Heal: Exploring the Scientific Basis of Subtle Energy in Healing (Paperback)
I found Diane Goldner's book made for some fascinating reading. As an investigative journalist, she studies the subject of healing in an informative yet entertaining way. Anyone who is interested or just plain curious about healing would be advised to check this book

I literally could not put it down. She holds the reader's attention throughout, as she studies the character, ethics and effectiveness of several prominent healers and their techniques. She also situates the modality of healing within the context of the current health crisis.

I would emphatically recommed this book. The Power of Infinite Love & Gratitude: An Evolutionary Journey to Awakening Your Spirit
