The book is full of great information for anyone who cares for horses. I like the practical, easy to understand recommendations for various products and wealth of information on ways to protect my horse from himself and from his environment. 1.0 out of 5 stars Far below expectations.........
I bought "The Perfect Stall" and enjoyed the book, though I did not follow Karen Hayes' advice to the-letter-of-the-law, when building my barn. I did it better. I bought "The Perfect Horsekeeper" hoping for professional advice that would enable me to provide the best care for my Friesians. I was sorely disappointed. I know the best muck rake and I'm not into gold fish...

The book is full of great information for anyone who cares for horses. I like the practical, easy to understand recommendations for various products and wealth of information on ways to protect my horse from himself and from his environment. This book helps weed through so many different products -- helps you find what works for you -- without trying everything on the market. I have given copies of this book and others in the Perfect Stall series to my friends who love and care for horses.

If you are already perfect, then you won't need this book and can write your own. However, for the rest of us who are always interested in a better way of doing things, then this is the book for you. I found it extremely interesting and full of all those wonderful ideas that you might pick up here and there from hundreds of conversations with seasoned grooms and horse owners, if you have that kind of time and connections.

I've always appreciated good, common sense advice about products, and tips on how to use them. That alone is worth the price of the book, made back in what I have saved. THANK YOU Dr. Hayes, for yet another excellent publication!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Horsekeeper, February 19, 2007
This review is from: How to Be the Perfect Horsekeeper (Paperback)
The book has many excellent suggestions and is well worth buying if you keep horses. I also purchased "The Perfect Stall" and there were a couple of important suggestions in it that weren't in "The Perfect Horsekeeper" so reading both is recomended.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXTREMELY knowledgeable and easy to understand!!, October 2, 2006
This review is from: How to Be the Perfect Horsekeeper (Paperback)
Dr. Hayes has written another down to earth, easy to read and understand, book about caring for horses. This book is a MUST HAVE for anyone who has horses.......whether you have one or a hundred. I had the privilege at one point in my life to actually have Dr. Hayes as my personal vet for my beloved horses. I have not known a vet before or since with more knowledge and talent. I'm so happy that Dr. Hayes has shared her knowledge with so many by writing this book!! I think it will make a great present for all my friends with horses.

I know the best muck rake and I'm not into gold fish in the watering trough and my compost skills are excellent. I also maintain a barn that is spotless and smells of cedar and Lysol, so using top soil and peat for bedding is out of the question and I completely disagree with some of Ms. Hayes' conclusions. I bought the first book on stalls for both of my children and myself, gifted my son with the horse keeping book for his birthday and bought a copy for myself. I feel as though I am owed $50. Even a beginner would find this second book sorely lacking. It reads as if the good vet and Friesian keeper wrote it straight off the cuff, leaving out the most important aspects of horse keeping. The second book is even more of an advertisement for vendors, than the first.
