Pretty Good Guide,
By
This review is from: How to Photograph Pets (Hardcover)
This is a pretty good little guide for photographing pets in a natural environment. Studio portraits of pets is not this book's strong suit. The author chooses to photograph animals outdoors and at play.
This is more a book for pet owners who want to improve their personal pet photography. There isn't a lot here for a professional photographer.

Nothing very innovative and very little information. More of a coffee table book although the picture on the cover is the best one in the whole book. Everything seems a little outdated but what should I expect with a copyright of 2002? Also I'm not sure why this book is priced so high. I bought it used and it's in pretty rough shape and still $15.

This book is absolutely fantastic!! It's packed with tons of useful hints, tips and ideas for the aspiring pet photographer! Lots of beautiful photographs that illustrate the techniques he uses. It also includes a glossary for terms that you may not know. The book is a hardcover and is beautifully put together.
It was a bit larger than I thought it would be, but that isn't an issue. Nick Ridley did an excellent job! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about pet photography!! A++++++!!!!

As said before, didn't really cover studio portrait photography at all, but would be a great guide for the pet owner that wants to capture their pet at play. Having said that, for the non-professional, I would recommend this book.

What a splendid book! Full of excellent and easily followed advice, and fabulous full colour photos for the photographer and artist to look at, love, and contemplate.
There a good number of books on photographing dogs at the moment, and as well, as that superb early book by Sally Anne Thompson has been out of print for so long - but seek it out if you can. I recommended this title to our local dog library because I was aware of Nick Ridley's fabulous photos from field trials, his book is more than I could have asked for. He covers indoor and outdoor portraits, cameras (film and digital), lighting, and backgrounds, plus composition; all in a very easy to read prose and superbly supported with excellent photos and illustrations. And just to inspire the dog artist/photographer even more, he has a lovely section on photographing other pets, yes cats, but ferrets, hamsters and others too. The book is solidly bound (hardcover) and printed on lovely stock - a credit to the publishers The Guild of Master Craftsman Publications. My only small gripe, is that the photo captions so often repeat, word for word, the text, which I found irritating. Each photo was clearly labelled with the equipment used to capture it, which I found useful and informative. Highly recommended! (about me: I do photography, field and show portraits and also work in watercolours) |
