Book Description

May 2001
How to Plan the Wedding You Really Want is a must-read for any woman who doesn't want to look back on her special day with pangs of regret.

We all want to avoid nasty and expensive surprises. To do that, you need to learn the most efficient way to get vendors to do what you want, the way you want, and when you want. You need to learn the questions to ask when hiring a photographer.

Feeling overwhelmed by checklists with 300 "to do" items on them? How to Plan the Wedding You Really Want leads you from initial vision through final detail in the process of planning your big event. You'll learn how to approach each hurdle in planning a wedding, from deciding who pays for what, to choosing who to invite, to knowing the right questions to ask each of your vendors.

The focus of this book is not to tell you which choices are right or wrong, but to help you to recognize what's right for you. The authors polled friends, family members, friends of friends, friends of family members, co-workers, and acquaintances to bring you the truth about what it takes to plan the wedding you really want, from the perspective of women who've done so (or failed to do so--and you'll learn why). How many women have the same questions, the same issues, and the same regrets?

Better to learn from their mistakes than through your own hard experience.

Most books about planning your wedding are written from the perspective of wedding insiders-the planners, the vendors, the people who have a stake in getting you to think a certain way about your wedding. They won't help you learn the truth about how to deal with wedding vendors in order to create an event that truly fulfills YOUR vision, not theirs. How to Plan the Wedding You Really Want will.

In fact, each chapter in How to Plan the Wedding You Really Want ends with some "Words from the Groom." This male perspective to each step along the wedding-planning path will help you to better understand your fiancé and, with any luck, make you less likely to pull his hair out during this process.

To put it mildly, men and women tend to approach impending nuptials very differently. Let this book bring a bit of humor and good cheer to each of you as you work toward that day of days.

Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Debbie MacGuffie is a writer, editor, and wife, as well as a planner extraordinaire. She is the author of numerous articles published on the Internet. She is not a wedding industry insider, although she’s had several of her articles published on wedding-related sites. She polled friends, family members, friends of friends, friends of family members, co-workers, and acquaintances and drew from her own experiences to bring you the truth about what it takes to plan the wedding you really want, from the perspective of women who’ve done so (or failed to do so—and you’ll learn why). Debbie and co-author Michael Spurlock have been together since 1990, but only married since 1997. Debbie denies rumors that this is because she enjoyed planning the wedding so much for the first seven years that she didn’t want to give it up!

Mike Spurlock is a freelance writer and husband. He has attended more weddings than he can count. In his former life as a television writer, producer, and cameraman, he moonlighted as a wedding videographer at numerous events. His “Words From the Groom” additions to this book will give you insight into a typical male point of view of the whole wedding extravaganza. It’s not pretty (but your fiancé will think it’s brilliant!)

This review is from: How to Plan the Wedding You Really Want (Spiral-bound)
Out of 7 books I bought, this is the only one I needed or used.

Everything in it came true! My flower vendor tried to change the conditions of our agreement at the last minute. Luckily, I had a written agreement thanks to the advice in this book, which seemed to startle them when they tried to pull the last minute change. Why not a 5? I'm not crazy about the title and I thought it needed more illustrations. That's about it. Everything else is great and it's definitely worth it. I especially like the fact that it lies flat. And it's funny.
