I have been playing piano for ten years and I finally decided it was time to move away from classical music and try something new. I looked into several Boogie Woogie books and ended up buying this one about a week ago.

This book has a wonderful collection of songs which are fun to play and sound like professional pieces. The book orders the songs from easy to the more difficult to help build on your skills.

The music is not hard at all. Most of the time the same bass pattern is kept in the left hand while the right hand plays the melody. There are no tricky fingerings or even rhythms. The pieces are all in either C, F, or G (from one flat to one sharp) and use familiar notes and chords. The difficulty of this book is a 6 on a scale from 1 to 10 - 10 being the hardest.

This book is perfect for beginners - beginning piano players, maybe not - but if you've never tried Boogie Woogie before and are looking for something new, this book is for you.

Anyone who has taken a year or more of piano lessons should have no problem with this book.

Do not buy this book unless you are and very experienced piano player, I must have not understood the reviews, for I thought it took you from very easy on to harder songs. This started off with very hard. So, don't buy this again if you are just starting out like I am. If you do you will be throwing your money away. I will be giving this away to some one far better than me at the piano.

The book starts with an overview of the left hand patterns used in some of the songs. Then it delves straight into the songs.

Songs included:
When The Saints Go Marching In
Bad Penny Blues
Frankie and johnny
Night Train
Alright, Okay, You Win
Boogie By Candlelight
Rock A Beatin' Boogie (by Bill Haley!)
Barrelhouse Boogie
Boogie Woogie Blues
J.D's Boogie Woogie
Roll'Em Pete
Tommy Dorsey's Boogie Woogie
Working In The Coalmine
Three Boogie Workouts

The reason that it's not a beginner's book is that several songs are not in the easy key of C (no sharps or flats). Some songs are in the key of F (1 flat), G (1 sharp) and Eb (3 flats). This book won't explain how to play a tremolo, or what "gva....loco" means. Most beginners do not know this.

For beginners, I suggest buying: Bastien Piano Basics Supplementary: Boogie, Rock & Country: level 1, 2 and 3. It's perfect for a first year piano student. See my other reviews for more recommendations after that.

Add a little music theory, some ear training (try playing blind like Ray Charles), and get some insight in chord structure and music becomes a little easier. Most of all, it's practicing that left hand at nauseum that is the key to success in boogie woogie. Build that muscle memory.

Verdict:

5 stars, if you already are an intermediate player or better.

For the beginner, if you have to internally mediate between: "I can or I can't handle this book", I'll say that you can't, as you lack the decisive passion to struggle through this book, just as my memory lacks the decisive passion to remember everything... ;-)

This book is a wonderful introduction to the world of boogie woogie. The musical notation is accurate and even includes direction on pedal, speed, and other musical nuances. The first song, When the Saints Come Marching In, appears to have been printed much askew, but does not cut off any of the actual music, so it is still readable. This book allows for many great boogie songs to choose from and easily master within a day or two for the advanced pianist who has only played classical before! Fun songs to play and rock out to!

This book is a lot of fun. As far as the debate if it's a beginner book or not, everyone's version of beginner is different. If you've never had lessons, you won't be able to pick up this book and play. It's not meant to teach basic piano. If you've had a year of lessons, you're probably going to do okay with it. You'll need to be able to read music, know fingering technique, and have built up some dexterity.
