WONDERFUL and helpful book on potty training!,
By Chai Latte (California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Potty Train Your Monster (Hardcover)
I HIGHLY recommend this book for parents with young ones, both little boys AND girls who are learning how to use a potty! The book caught my attention when I saw it in a family magazine.
The book consists of ten steps that aid a parent on how to potty train a "monster". The writing style is unique, funny and informative. While the book is meant to be read to little ones, it simultaneously serves as a guide to parents by giving them helpful tips on how to complete the steps. The book certainly kept my child's attention because it was funny and entertaining. I loved the tip, "Never, ever leave your monster alone with a roll of toilet paper!" We could only imagine what would happen if we did. At first I was confused by Amazon's reading level listed as 9-12 years, but as I read the book, I realized most potty trainees can't read! So its written for an older child or adult to read to the little one. The illustrations are the most ADORABLE! The three monsters you see on the cover are a few of many more that are featured in this book. They are super cute and appeal to both genders. My little girl who is a "girly girl" loves these little monsters. And I love them too! My favorite page is the Monster Underwear! page. There are many potty training books out there but this one stands out as simply amazing. Not only does it have entertaining text for little ones, it incorporates information to help parents implement the ten steps. The illustrations contribute greatly to the book and together with the unique writing style, makes this book effective and a true gem. I'm glad I stumbled upon this book!

5 stars from my little monster,

I have a very strong willed 3 year old. We've been through every potty book, potty chair, potty watch known to man with no success. He is simply just too busy to take time out of his day to use the potty. FINALLY a book he's totally into. While we were in the car on our way home he was talking about using the potty and it was the first thing he wanted to do when we walked in the door! Now looking for a "little monster" he can take with him to the potty to show how its done! :)

This is a fun story and a great book for potty training your "monster"! Our son loves it and loves to roar and growl along with the monsters!

The book is not what I expected. The story isn't that great and I am looking for something better. The book itself is good quality and arrived quickly though!

At first my son was reluctant to read the book because it is somewhat long. Because he was new to the potty he needed short books :) This last week he chooses this book every time. I think this is a good book once your child learns to sit on the potty a little longer.

Our 2 3/4 year old son really enjoys this book and asks for us to read it not only on the potty, but even at bedtime sometimes. Unfortunately, it hasn't influenced his potty-training interest at all, which was my hope in getting him the book to begin with. It is pretty cute though, and most kids will get a kick out of it, especially if they are monster fans.

Love this book! It is hilarious. Love the illustrations. We were looking for a few books to get our 22 month old girl interested in using the potty and this fits the bill. We read this every day. I highly recommend it.

We received a free advance copy of this book to review for a parenting site. My 2 1/2-year-old daughter thought it was hilarious. Unfortunately, after we had read it about 10 times, she accidentally dropped it... in the potty.
I thought she'd forget about the book, but a month or two later, she was still asking me if I would get her a new copy, so I did. It was worth it... her eyes lit up and she cracked up all over again as we read it. It's a fairly advanced book for what it is-- not good for the younger potty trainers, but good for little smarty-pantses and older trainers. (The recommended level is actually 2-5 years old.) Some of the concepts will go over almost any little one's head, but the general silliness, illustrations, and funny warnings make up for that. My daughter cracks up, for instance, at the little purple monster who doesn't want to let go of his diapers ("Let... go... Spike!"), the warning that you should never leave a monster alone with a bar of soap (accompanied by a photo of a monster covered head to toe in suds), and the idea that monsters like to eat books. It's written in a satirical "how-to" style, sort of like a feature article in a magazine, complete with sidebars. It's nothing like other books on this topic. Clearly a hit in our household.

Clever,

The book is clever but is really a step by step of how to actually train a child to use the potty. It is not a narrative story, so if your looking for a story this is not it.
