5.0 out of 5 stars A great book!
This book was written in 1900 by R.A. Torrey (1856-1928), evangelist, pastor, educator and author. In it, Dr. Torrey looks at prayer, with chapters on: 1) the importance of prayer, 2) praying unto God (as opposed to praying for the edification of the listeners), 3) obeying and praying, 4) praying in the name of Christ and according to the will of God, 5) praying in the...

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book!, April 3, 2003
This review is from: How To Pray (Moody Classics) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was written in 1900 by R.A. Torrey (1856-1928), evangelist, pastor, educator and author. In it, Dr. Torrey looks at prayer, with chapters on: 1) the importance of prayer, 2) praying unto God (as opposed to praying for the edification of the listeners), 3) obeying and praying, 4) praying in the name of Christ and according to the will of God, 5) praying in the Spirit, 6) always praying and not fainting, 7) abiding in Christ, 8) praying with thanksgiving, 9) hindrances to prayer, 10) when to pray, and 11) the need of prayer before and during revivals.

Though this book was written more than a century ago, it is as exciting and relevant today as if it was brand new. The author makes copious use of Biblical passages, showing examples and admonitions on prayer. And, though many old books are dry reads compared to modern books, this one is so wonderfully written that its age is completely irrelevant. I think that this is a great book, one that would make a worthwhile addition to the library of every Christian.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST book on prayer., July 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: How To Pray (Paperback)
I have read many books on prayer but this one stands out head and shoulders above all others. Though it was written at such a different time in history, it is just as relevant today. What R.A. Torrey does in this book is much more than teach dry methods. Rather, he imparts to the reader the true spirit of prayer and how vital it is in practicality to our lives on a daily basis. A MUST for any believer serious about having a true, intimate relationship with their "Abba Father."

5.0 out of 5 stars A Powerful Treastise on Prayer, February 20, 2002
By
This review is from: How To Pray (Moody Classics) (Mass Market Paperback)
Torrey's title is, in my mind, somewhat misleading, but don't let this stop you from reading this invaluable book. There is no handbook on how to pray, really, nor can there be as true prayer is personal and relational. Still, How to Pray offers words on what prayer is, what it can do, and why we sometimes fail, both personally and corporately. "You have not because you ask not" says Torrey repeatedly. He expounds on this simple truth inspirationally and practically. This book should be read by anyone serious about prayer.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of very few Excellent books on prayer, April 15, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: How To Pray (Paperback)
This is an awesome book! I've given copies to several friends. While reading at a coffee shop one day, I thought "I can't wait to get home and pray like this!" This book focuses on God and aligning your heart with His will, not simply getting what you want. A short and easy read, but it efficiently makes an impact.

4.0 out of 5 stars "A classic standard, but at least two others are a bit more complete.", September 3, 2006

Suzanne (Seattle, Washington) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How To Pray (Paperback)
Flat out, there aren't many good, solid books on prayer. This is one of them. I gave it four stars for two reasons. First, what it covers, it covers extremely well. Torrey is an acknowledged master from generations gone by. Second, for some reason, he leaves out a few aspects of prayer that should have been included (like praying for things that seem already promised to us--WHY that's important).

I would recommend this book along with only 2 others. "With Christ in the School of Prayer" (Murray) is another standard work that will deliver the goods. And if you like the way Torrey organizes his lessons, you will probably like an author of this generation (who must have read Torrey!) who wrote "God, Help Me Pray!". This book (though almost impossible to find) reads a bit more contemporary, and could be the modern standard on prayer.

I would not be without Torrey, but the newer books cover everything he does and then some. The latter book is also quite practical, if you like that sort of thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Watch out for edited version, December 15, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: How To Pray (Moody Classics) (Mass Market Paperback)
I think this is a great book, covering the key aspects of making your pray life more powerful. I would recommend the book that is published by CruGuru or other non-mass market versions. I have seen copies of the mass market paper back used by some in my small group, and found that it is missing parts of the original book.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Chapter, August 14, 2008
This review is from: How To Pray (Paperback)
Great book. I could rename the first chapter to "What can prayer really accomplish", because thats what it outlines--what can prayer REALLY do. Torrey breaks it down and makes it understandable, even for the new Christian. Oh if more Christians would know and apply these biblical truths that Torrey outlines and details in this magnificent book--then we would have a mighty revival sweeping through the land, breaking people down, and providing the way for them to cry out for mercy to God and receive salvation, and then live useful lives. This kind of prayer (outlined in this book) is an essential activity that you cannot do with out, if you are going to have a revival. May we have it. I am eagerly learning what this book has to say. It is fairly short and straight to the point. Just saying it like it is--that's Torrey. I do not think you will be disappointed--that is--if you seek first the kingdom of God.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best book every written on prayer IMHO., July 28, 2008
Although this book was written close to 100 years ago, it reads like it could have been written yesterday.

It is the clearest, most concise book ever written on the subject of prayer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pray for Eternal Salvation and in avoiding Temptation., June 22, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: How To Pray (Moody Classics) (Mass Market Paperback)
Anyone can know how to pray, but if you don't know then get this literature and be familiar in how to pray the right way. What do i mean by saying the right way? People have to pray with feeling and with heart. One cannot be cold in prayer because Jesus Our God knows everything about us, and He himself will not grant us our visions in case our thoughts are about greed, and destruction. Everything that is told to Him in prayer must be with Love. But praying, the ultimate thing in prayer is about "YOU" and "OTHERS" getting eternal salvation, and praying to avoid the "TEMPTATIONS" of this World. Never stop praying. People who are not clean will not enter the Kingdom of God (Christ), so pray to Christ that your sins be forgiven so you can enter the Kingdom. Get this book, and buy some copies for your friends, because they too need to be saved. We are carnal beings and in the end many are going to hell, but avoid hell and simply pray alot To Jesus Christ.
