1.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
The cover of the book includes the words "Easy to use 6 Step Balance System". I assumed there would be 6 exercises that I could do every day.

The book actually contains 14 stretching in bed exercises, 24 balance exercises, 8 ball handling activities, 6 warm up exercises, and 2 how to fall safely exercises. This is 54 exercises, not some rather simple set...

The book, How To Prevent Falls is excellent. It is well written and professionally illustrated. It contains loads of information and easy to do exercises that really do make a difference. They are fun, too! Another nice feature is that it is easy for seniors to read because the type is not too small and the page layouts are very clear. This book makes a great gift for older people. Not only that, the author has her phone number in the book so anyone can call her with questions. And, if you do call, she is very nice and seems to really enjoy talking to people who are concerned about preventing falls. Wouldn't it be nice if more authors were like that?

My 83 year old Mom was having balance problems. After checking with doctors and going to a physical therapist with not much improvement we decided to give this book a try. WOW! These steps really work! My mother is stronger and more confident with great improvement in her balance.
This book is not only for the elderly! It's a must for everyone. I do a lot of sports so I'm also doing the steps too. Track and field teams and ski teams are also using it.

This book is invaluable for anyone that is beginning to experience a lack of balance. It is filled with easy exercises and movements that are designed to improve a person's balance and awareness of their bodies. It has a series of easy stretches to do in bed, before you get up in the morning that are a great way to start the day. It has been carefully researched and written by a delightful woman who is very accessable. She publishes her personal e-mail and telephone number if you should have any questions or problems. Following these suggestions could certainly restore a person's confidence in their ability to fully enjoy the activites of each day.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Thin Book Can Save Lives, January 9, 2012
A couple years ago, my almost eighty year-old step-mother was out walking her dog when the dog yanked hard and down she went. With the fall, came a broken hip, fractured in many places. She still hasn't fully recovered from the effects of that fall and spends way too much time in bed for her health. This is an example of the importance of learning to maintain and strengthen our balance as we age. In How to Prevent Falls, citing the Center for Disease Control statistics, Betty Perkins-Carpenter notes that "1 of every 3 persons over age 65 falls each year. Of these, 20-30% will suffer moderate to severe injuries causing reduced mobility and independence and greater risk of death. For those over age 85, falling is the leading cause of death." Using this book and working with a physical therapist, we're hoping she get recover more mobility.

Clearly learning to maintain balance as we age is important stuff. And Betty Perkins-Carpenter is an expert at it. I've been impressed with How to Prevent Falls. It is an encouraging and helpful book, full of lots of exercises learned from the experience of working hands-on with elders (she runs balance workshops). She knows details matter, giving "FitNotes" pointing out important but subtle details that are helpful to pay attention to. Well recommended for anyone over age 65 or their caretakers wanting improve balance and prevent injuries.
