5.0 out of 5 stars As technical as you need it to be.
Some of the book, I've read on forums and web pages before.

Just about everything else I had never read and never even considered.

What's the best way to print puff inks so they finish smoothly? Change the dot density?

What's dot density? It's covered in the book. In depth.

How could I set up a commercial shop...

The book contains a huge amount of information, but though it was updated in 2008 it still seems quite outdated. What really drove me nuts trying to read this were all the editing errors, particularly the wrong or left out words. No, it did not change the content, but leaves me wondering if that is the level of detail paid to the content. Let's be honest, the intro said basically, "nothing has changed since we first wrote the book-look, we can even use our original intro"...cute and entertaining, but also perhaps true...

The Good:
1) Lots of information.
2) Written in a goof-ball friendly manner that is easy to read.
3) Does go into some of the business aspects and more advanced topics.
4) Good for someone with some experience, looking into expanding into a business (this is not me).
5) Forms and paperwork examples are very nice.
6) Good overview of all the options out there.

The Bad:
1) Not much in the way of step by step instruction, and not really good for a real beginner (this is me).
2) Outdated processes and material.
3) Areas seemed rather self-serving.
4) Despite being goof-ball and easy to read, it was not very engaging (read-boring).

Overall, I do not recommend for a beginner-I really thought that the Ryonet screen-printing 101 DVD did a much better job of explaining it in a step by step manner. I watched that first, and I am not sure I would have understood the book as well had I not. BUT perhaps that is also why I found it a very dull read-must take into account I watched the video first. These have been my only two resources up to now, other than the massive number of free videos on the internet.

5.0 out of 5 stars As technical as you need it to be., June 4, 2010

Some of the book, I've read on forums and web pages before.

Just about everything else I had never read and never even considered.

What's the best way to print puff inks so they finish smoothly? Change the dot density?

What's dot density? It's covered in the book. In depth.

How could I set up a commercial shop? There's a floor plan in here.

Plans for a one color machine? Plans for a four color machine? Parts list and plans included as appendices.

Information on $50,000 presses? There also.

It's all in there and a ton of other stuff I can't even remember at the moment. This book makes me want to buy Post-It flags and a highlighter and go to town.

If you want to know about it, it's in there. If you don't want to know about it - like you're not interested - that's in there too and you can go ahead and skip that section and not worry about it.

I wish it had a lay-flat spine so you could really open it up and annotate it but I'd hardly consider that a mark against it.

It's slightly expensive but once you realize what's inside, totally worth it. And reasonably up-to-date, as far as technologies go.

If you're considering buying one book about screen printing, make it this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Industry Bible, January 11, 2012
This review is from: How to Print T-Shirts for Fun and Profit (Paperback)
I originally bought this book when I started my business, has all the basics to get you started in screenprinting. I also bought the second printing to get updated information. 11 years later some information is outdated but its still an excellent resource if you want to get into t-shirt printing. Highly recommended.

I'm only a casual screen printer, but if I were to go into business I would recommend this book! FULL of information on the entire process of screen printing. Pages containing full page charts for comparison, & quick reference included- would be useful to copy & post in the screening area.

3.0 out of 5 stars Goofy, but worthwhile, August 28, 2008
This review is from: How to Print T-Shirts for Fun and Profit (Paperback)
This book is a great reference and "kickstarter" to get one up and going in the screenprinting biz. It, however, is by no means the "be-all" and "end-all" to learning the trade.

Practice practice practice and talk to those that are doing it, but use this book for orientation.

I have heard from most people I talked with concerning screen printing that this is the Bible of the business and it is quite informational. Not finished yet, but seems it will be a great help in getting started and being profitable.
