3.0 out of 5 stars How to Profit from the Art Print Market
The book is not what I expected. It's more about business than about the art end. Right at the beginning it tells me I need $100,000. The book was recommended to me. I'll finish the book but it is not something I am enjoying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Here's the Answers from the Horse's Mouth..., August 7, 2006
This review is from: How to Profit from the Art Print Market (Paperback)
So much of what you read today concerning any business advice comes from the other end of the horse. But Barney's book is a must-read simply because he was in the art business for nearly 20 years! He knows about art--from how to make it to how to sell it. If you're an artist looking to represent himself or herself, this book's wisdom is invaluable. It's been my experience, having also been in the art business for 13 years, that most artists don't know how to market themselves or sell their stuff. A lot of the art you see isn't necessarily the best of what's out there, it's just better marketed than some of the other stuff.

Take advantage of the experience Barney brings to the table. Years with DECOR magazine, the Bible of the art trade, and with the DECOR Expo trade shows. He's seen the good, the bad and the ugly...and he's seen how to market it. Even if you, the artist, isn't necessarily planning to market yourself, get this book, read it and then pass it along to the person or persons who will be marketing your stuff.

The bottom line is that the print market is the most lucrative part of the art market, unless you're a Monet or a Van Gogh, and who is? But it's also the part of the market where you can easily lose whatever money you throw into it...unless you know how it works and how to work it. Barney's book, "How to Profit from the Art Print Market," does exactly that. HIGHLY recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing else like it., September 11, 2006
This review is from: How to Profit from the Art Print Market (Paperback)
I heartily recommend this book to any artist wishing to enter the print market. I'm thrilled to have found it, read it, and look forward to sharing it with my clients. As far as I know, it's one of a kind. "How to Profit . . . " demystifies the print world for readers. It's a great reference for who you need to know and where you need to go. I also very much appreciate Davey's frankness. He speaks with genuine authority.

This book is THE SOURCE for any artist wishing to find information about the art print market. Five stars aren't enough for this book! It is highly informative and the author, Barney Davey generously shares his experience and knowledge of every aspect of the business. The book is new and has current information and a wealth of resources and contacts for further research. His advice is clear and concise and will provide you with all the information needed to make an educated venture into the art print market. I read this book, followed his advice and within a short time acquired a contract with a global publishing firm. I can't recommend this book enough!

After reading I would go to the sites to see even clearer what he was talking about. The best "How to" book I've read...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!, November 17, 2006

This review is from: How to Profit from the Art Print Market (Paperback)
Barney Davey's book, "How to Profit from the Art Print Market" opened my eyes to a whole new world that I
didn't realize was possible for me. I knew I had some important growth decisions to make and the guidelines in his book helped me enormously! I read the entire book in several days and then re-read it a second time. The book is written very well, easy to understand, and very informative. After applying what I read, I am happy to say that I am now marketing my first print on a large scale in an outstanding market that I have worked very hard to enter. I also have national and international businesses considering my other original paintings for reproduction prints on canvas. Buy the book!

I've been a professional artist for almost 20 years now and doing well selling originals, but would like to expand my market and be able to support myself on my art without having to teach on the side. The "giclee" print market has crossed my mind, but I am also aware that it is considered selling out in certain circles. Mr. Davey is a very knowledgeable resource in the print marketplace and makes convincing arguments for entering the arena whether it is working with a publisher or becoming a self-published print artist. In either case, he gave enough information to answer any questions I have had as well as the tools and resources to follow through with a plan of action. He answered questions I didn't even know I had. If you are considering entering the print market, this book is exactly what you need to get started.

5.0 out of 5 stars What they don't teach you in art school, March 1, 2008
By
TDash (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Profit from the Art Print Market (Paperback)
Here's the book I wish I was assigned in an art school class. A great primer for those interested in breaking into the lucrative fine art print market. Barney Davey generously shares his insights into the art print and publishing industry. As a seasoned art business insider, Davey backs up his many suggestions with facts, examples, websites and numbers of how the artists that are making a decent living achieved their success. Much more inspiring than the multitudes of "inspirational" books written for artists which often don't adequately address the question of how to make a living.

He begins by having you ask yourself the principle question of whether the print market is right for you at all. If it is, he helps you decide whether to go the self-publishing route, or whether to find a good publisher to work with, and gives the pros and cons of each approach.

Two things that I would love to see in a followup from Mr. Davey: one is a close look at how the web has changed/challenged the art business landscape in the past few years. Second is an indepth analysis of how the constantly improving printing technologies (giclee, and printing on new materials) impact artists and the art market.

5.0 out of 5 stars BARNEY'S BIBLE FOR SALES SUCCESS, September 1, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: How to Profit from the Art Print Market (Paperback)
This book should be called BARNEY'S BIBLE FOR SALES SUCCESS. Any artist who does not own it, study it and keep it by his easel or on his drawing board is taking the long way `round on his career path and will pay dearly in wasted time, effort and frustration. Everyone who owns, or aspires to own, a business should read it - the success principles are universal whether you are painting pictures or painting houses. I spent 20+ years as a successful sales rep and artist and I'm learning something on every page I read. I'm retired now and sharing what I learned in a series of free podcasts at MY SALES TIPS FOR ARTISTS website. If only I'd had it then, I'd have retired years earlier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Art Marketing Book Ever!, August 30, 2007
This review is from: How to Profit from the Art Print Market (Paperback)
I have read many art marketing books, and this one is DEFINITELY the best ever!! Davey informs with great wisdom and wit, and makes a book about marketing as much of a page-turner as some of the fiction novels I read! I am a painter, and my husband a sculptor, who tired of the gallery scene years ago...now we are readying ourselves to re-enter the art arena once again, and this time, armed with Davey's fabulous information contained in this book, we are well-informed as to the choices we have. I highly recommend this book....it is well worth the price...our copy is dog-eared, highlighted and we used the information to help write a winning business plan on marketing my husband's bronzes in a comprehensive way. Thank you .....this book is the BEST!!
