At the urging of his late friend and screenwriting mentor, actress-screenwriter Kate Phillips (who appeared in nearly 100 films in the '30s and '40s including "Drums Along the Mohawk" and nine Charlie Chans and who co-wrote the sci-fi cult classic THE BLOB, starring Steve McQueen), McLain completed his own screenplay based on his novel, THE RECKONING, which was a finalist in the international Writer's Digest Screenwriting Competition.
