5.0 out of 5 stars The perils of interspecies dating. February 5, 2012
By para
Format:Kindle Edition
As low writer on the totem pole at his magazine, Charlie gets the pleasure of coming home to his girlfriend to explain he will be going on a series of dates with various aliens for a human (well, alien) interest piece. It would be a disservice to spoil the story by going into any more detail.

So far all I've read by Scalzi are a few short stories, all of comedic bent. His writing style suits the material well. Personally I have found most good but a bit insubstantial for my tastes. The detail he gives his characters and settings are astounding, and usually I'm left wishing the stories themselves were stronger and up to the high standards of those elements.

Not so here. Charlie's tale is engrossing and the humor and plot are wonderfully balanced. Everything works beautifully here. Even though it's a short story it's more than worth the current price ($0.99).

Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Quick Read - Recommended February 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
"How I Proposed to My Wife: An Alien Sex Story" is an amusing Sci-Fi story of inter-species relations by one of my favorite Sci-Fi authors, John Scalzi (Old Man's War and The Android's Dream). The story is very short but, for what it is, it didn't need to be any longer.

No plot spoilers from me: The story is told by Charlie, a junior writer for a magazine that gets assigned to do an "Alien Interest" story and has to "date" members of the alien races that have embassies on Earth (it is hinted that there are many of these). Unfortunately Charlie has a serious girlfriend, Claire, and really has no idea what aliens do on dates... This was an entertaining "fish out of water" story that painted some very funny imagery but it does contain a scene that was more explicit than expected.

I enjoyed this and will be looking for my Scalzi shorts, recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and creative sci-fi fun! March 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a great little story!

With such smooth writing skills you feel like you're swept up in the story right away, as Charlie learns he must write a story for his magazine about alien dating rituals, even though he is practically engaged to his (human) girlfriend. To keep his job he has no choice but to take on the assignment.

John Scalzi does a great job of making the sci-fi element seem secondary to the plot of the story. It's also very funny, it even made me giggle out loud a couple of times. Who wouldn't want to know what happens on human-alien dates?

Excellent short story, I would recommend it to any sci-fi fans.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun Fluff August 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Like an old "Twilight Zone" episode, How I Proposed to My Wife has a lot to recommend it. The overall journey of the protagonist, the clever dialogue, the strange aliens, and the strong willed (and almost "had it up to here") fiancee are all well done. It doesn't have anything deep or extreme to offer, but it doesn't need to. My biggest disappointment was that there wasn't another clever story to follow (usually see these in collections!). Very fast read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious June 9, 2012
By reader
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is exactly what I want out of a short story. Something quick and fun. I love this... and after the coda sections in Redshirts I would say that I almost enjoy Scalzi more in the short form. He is an amazing writer, and his stories sing in a way that I am reminded of Asimov or Phillip K. Dick. Scalzi are you hearing this? We want an anthology of only you! Just short stories! 99 cents each! Now!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful reminder May 27, 2012
By Krash
Format:Kindle Edition
I am so happy Scalzi offered this short story free - outside of a quick fun read, it reminded me how much I loved his other work, and I went and purchased Kindle editions of the Old Man's War saga. Not many science fiction writers nowdays canvhandle the humorous short in the tradition of a Tenn or Davidson; Scalzi is among the few.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes you feel like he was there January 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Many writers have a hard time making a story about alien sex seem convincing. John Scalzi is not one of those writers. This story is compelling and very, very funny. It's easily worth the token price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sort of okay short story November 1, 2013
By KD0711
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is not really a book, but the price justify calling it one, so really not an issue with that. The story is okay, but I can not quite get too enamoured with it, pace is needed when only 25 pages, most of the story happen behind / before the reader is part of it. Presume this is really a small exercise in having a little fun on behalf of Salzci.

Go buy and read, but do not expect too much.

3.0 out of 5 stars interesting and amusing
Not a typical John Scalzi book, and by that I mean Red Shirts, Old Man Wars, Fuzzy a Nation, and more. Instead this has a different feel to it.
