5.0 out of 5 stars The perils of interspecies dating. February 5, 2012
By para
Format:Kindle Edition
As low writer on the totem pole at his magazine, Charlie gets the pleasure of coming home to his girlfriend to explain he will be going on a series of dates with various aliens for a human (well, alien) interest piece. It would be a disservice to spoil the story by going into any more detail.

So far all I've read by Scalzi are a few short stories, all of comedic bent. His writing style suits the material well. Personally I have found most good but a bit insubstantial for my tastes. The detail he gives his characters and settings are astounding, and usually I'm left wishing the stories themselves were stronger and up to the high standards of those elements.

Not so here. Charlie's tale is engrossing and the humor and plot are wonderfully balanced. Everything works beautifully here. Even though it's a short story it's more than worth the current price ($0.99).

Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Quick Read - Recommended February 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
"How I Proposed to My Wife: An Alien Sex Story" is an amusing Sci-Fi story of inter-species relations by one of my favorite Sci-Fi authors, John Scalzi (Old Man's War and The Android's Dream). The story is very short but, for what it is, it didn't need to be any longer.

No plot spoilers from me: The story is told by Charlie, a junior writer for a magazine that gets assigned to do an "Alien Interest" story and has to "date" members of the alien races that have embassies on Earth (it is hinted that there are many of these). Unfortunately Charlie has a serious girlfriend, Claire, and really has no idea what aliens do on dates... This was an entertaining "fish out of water" story that painted some very funny imagery but it does contain a scene that was more explicit than expected.

I enjoyed this and will be looking for my Scalzi shorts, recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and creative sci-fi fun! March 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a great little story!

With such smooth writing skills you feel like you're swept up in the story right away, as Charlie learns he must write a story for his magazine about alien dating rituals, even though he is practically engaged to his (human) girlfriend. To keep his job he has no choice but to take on the assignment.

John Scalzi does a great job of making the sci-fi element seem secondary to the plot of the story. It's also very funny, it even made me giggle out loud a couple of times. Who wouldn't want to know what happens on human-alien dates?

Excellent short story, I would recommend it to any sci-fi fans.

Not sure why it is, but inter species alien sex stories are not common in SF literature. Maybe the thought of doing the wild thing with bug eyed monsters scares the crap out of... Read more

A good story that gets into what different alien dating rituals could be like but the descriptions are very superficial.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute, Fun
Scalzi is a creative guy. You will enjoy it. As I recall it only cost a buck or two and it was totally worth it. But no big deal.

This book is mildly funny. It has a wacky plot, but I have read much better books from Jon Scalzi's hand.
