Wow - Straightforward info from spot cleaning laundry to cleaning your house with basic (and less expensive) ingredients you have around the house. No more expensive cleaners! Wow - Straightforward info from spot cleaning laundry to cleaning your house with basic (and less expensive) ingredients you have around the house. No more expensive cleaners! Plus a guide on how to clean everything and how often - and even advice on cleaning things you probably never thought of cleaning or wondered how to clean properly (like rust spots on your concrete driveway). For a mom with a toddler, this was a big help. Also look for Linda Cobb on the DIY channel.

This review is from: How the Queen Cleans Everything : Handy Advice for a Clean House, Cleaner Laundry, and a Year of Timely Tips (Hardcover)
This book does basically cover how to clean practically everything in your home. It's a very handy reference for cleaning, laundry, and outlines a year's worth of tasks that should be done at most people's homes (and often aren't).

Linda Cobb's approach is down to earth, warm, friendly, and very practical. She takes a lot of the fuss out of cleaning, suggests effective alternatives to expensive, toxic cleaning products, and makes recommendations where a commercial product will suit the reader best.

In addition to an encyclopedia of cleaning information, she also makes valuable suggestions as to how frequently items need to be cleaned, how to choose carpet cleaning contractors, and the like. I would suggest teaming this book with one of Don Aslett's books such as "Is There Life After Housework?" and you would have an unbeatable reference set for cleaning nearly anything around your home.

That, and Linda Cobb's writing style is fun, funny and thoroughly entertaining. Good value and a good investment for your home and belongings.

This book is packed with very helpful and seldom found information. I have 30+ years of experience in taking care of a home and still found this book to be a wealth of knowledge. It would be a great wedding shower or new home gift for anyone. It is very easy to navigate and has very simple solutions for everyday problems.

This book was just what I expected. This is a must for anyone who has a house. It advises you on how to get out different stains on all sorts of materials. I even found it useful to get candle wax off of my wall. I am really looking forward to when I have time to actually use it and implement her cleaning ideas. Could help organize and clean a house much more efficiently!

3.0 out of 5 stars She's the Queen, But..., August 10, 2006

I love Linda Cobb's cheery, enthusiastic attitude towards cleaning. But this book seems like it was written in a hurry, with inconsistent advice, very few explanations of procedures, and incomplete indexing. At one point, she says that vacuuming twice a week is essential, in another place, she says once a week is fine. Rarely is there an explanation as to why something works, or why something should be done in a certain way. And yikes! How to find alll the references to perspiration stains? Not in the index. You've got to sweat it out through the whole book to find all the suggestions. I truly hope the Queen writes a second edition with all the details I know she would like to impart.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great Idea -- Poor Execution, December 9, 2005
This review is from: How the Queen Cleans Everything : Handy Advice for a Clean House, Cleaner Laundry, and a Year of Timely Tips (Hardcover)
I bought Queen of Clean thinking that it would be a great resource guide. One would think the "Queen" of clean, could provide this bachelor with some organization and structure throughout the year.

After my New Year's resolution to maintain a neater household, I quickly paged through the book thinking it was a perfect fit. Her ideas and the information she shares are quite helpful.

My problem -- did the editors ever think that an index might be necessary? On several occassion when I've needed an instant suggestion (i.e. the romoval of a wine stain or cleaning my showerhead), I have been unable to locate the solution, though I know it is in there somewhere. After fifteen minutes (the stain is already setting in) of fumbling through the spiral binder which feels like any page could tear with an easy turn, [...]. My solutions popped up instantly.

My suggestion is: save yourself the $20 and get high speed internet.

This review is from: How the Queen Cleans Everything : Handy Advice for a Clean House, Cleaner Laundry, and a Year of Timely Tips (Hardcover)
I had no idea why I always ended up with streaks when I washed the kitchen floor, but now I know, and don't have them anymore. Many of the tips in this book are more than worth its cost and actually inspired me to do more cleaning by presenting a cheap, effective solution to an annoying problem. For example, alcohol/water in a spray bottle really does instantly get rid of hair spray on the vanity.

I got a kick out of simply reading the book, too, because of its lively style. Not all of the solutions work as well as I hoped, but many did. Even the ones that didn't produce perfect results are generally greener and cheaper than harsher approaches and may be good enough for many.

I actually had to buy several of the products mentioned since I didn't have them in the house, and a few are kind of hard to find since store shelves are so filled with brightly colored chemical solutions these days. While I want to minimize chemicals and simplify the array of products I have to keep on hand, I also want an effective result, so I've ended up with a combination of 'the Queen's' tips and standard products I've found that do a great job. It was hard for me to throw away the non-performers I've collected, but it turned out some were very effective at killing the weeds in the driveway. Even if you only come away with five or six tips that ease the hassle of cleaning for you, the book is well worth the purchase.

This review is from: How the Queen Cleans Everything : Handy Advice for a Clean House, Cleaner Laundry, and a Year of Timely Tips (Hardcover)
This book is jam packed with lots of information for cleaning things from tile an grout (which is the reason I bought the book) to carpets with various stains, as well as what to do to get clean/organized each month. I recommend this book over the other one I bought "Talking Dirty with the Queen of Clean" because it contains much of the same information, but more of it.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Little Fanatical, June 18, 2004

This review is from: How the Queen Cleans Everything : Handy Advice for a Clean House, Cleaner Laundry, and a Year of Timely Tips (Hardcover)
This book has good household hints, and some good ways on how to get your clothes and house clean, but this woman is a little fanatical on how things should be clean. I mean, I like things clean just as much as any other person, but some of it is taking the "cleanliness is next to godliness" message a little too far, For example, in one chapter, she tells you how to clean your washing machine. It touches soap and water almost every day, for heaven's sake!
