5.0 out of 5 stars the best out there
I am a novice dog owner and I have to say this book has helped me tremendously with the most important period of the dog's life- puppyhood. This is my favorite "puppy guide" in my large library of puppy and dog training books I have bought over the last year. All I can say is wow! If you have been searching for a good book so that you can raise a new family...

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay, but better one is out there
This book was an okay book. It covers all major areas of puppy development, looks at training and problems in an elementary way, and uses nice black and white pictures for illustration. I find that it does rely rather heavily on food as reward. I liked this book better than the Monks of Skete's Art of Raising a puppy because it's more practical, yet I think that you...

I liked this book better than the Monks of Skete's Art of Raising a puppy because it's more practical, yet I think that you are even better of if you purchase Kilcommens Good owners, great dogs. Though a bit more expensive, you get what you pay for. To me, dog training books need to have the potential to be used daily as a guide. I consulted this book maybe 3 times, while I use the Kilcommens book almost every other day.

5.0 out of 5 stars The information was outstanding., September 7, 1999

This book had everything any person needs to know if they are getting a puppy. The issues it touches are ones I've never seen touched before in a format so easy to understand. It's invigorating that someone actually put it into words and published it. This is the puppy bible. For anyone getting, or considering getting a puppy this is the first book they need to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can LIVE with my puppy, May 19, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With (Paperback)
Orginally, I purchased 3 books on training new puppies. "How to Raise A Puppy You Can Live with" is the only book I would recommend. And I do highly recommend it. I found it to be interesting and descriptive, but also an easy read, with language for the lay audience. The book details the growth of a puppy, at which ages to expect certain results, training methods at different age levels, and methods to punish a puppy without being cruel (like ignoring your puppy, which gets them begging for your love and acceptance). The book is filled with tons of advice on situations that will be encountered along the way of raising your puppy.

5.0 out of 5 stars How To Raise a Puppy You Can Live With, May 2, 2000

This is the best book for those planning to bring a new bundle of fur into their family and for those who already own a dog. All breeders should include this informative book as part of their package with the puppy. It is packed with information, but not an overwhelming read. I would not raise a dog without it.

Originally my vet recommended this book. Subsequently, I have shared the recommendation with several soon to be or relatively new dog owners. I highly recommend this book, especially to those who are new to the world of dogs.

5.0 out of 5 stars The new puppy owner's guide and companion, November 10, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: How to Raise a Puppy You Can Live With (Paperback)
I love this book. I bought it on a friend's recommendation years ago and found it so useful that on the very rare occasions that I breed a litter, I include a copy with the "New Owners Pack" that goes with a puppy to its new home. The advice is very sensible and clear. Even dog owners of long standing can learn lots of new tips. The discussions on crate training and house training, preventing aggression and dominance problems and the advisability of obedience training are excellent but whole book is uniformly good.

I bought this book before the purchase of my new puppy..I wanted to make sure that I could handle and train a puppy that would end up being a pleasure to live with..After reading this book, I knew what to look for when I went to look at the puppy, because of the information in "The Temperment Test", I knew what to do with the puppies when I looked at them for the first time. I am fully confident that:1.)I can raise a good puppy that my family can live with,2.)That I picked the best puppy that would suit my family's livestyle. I highly recommend this book. Full of valuable information!

4.0 out of 5 stars Every puppy should come with this book., October 15, 1997
By A Customer
For the price of this particular book, if I were to work at a vet office or breed puppies this book would be included in the "going home" package. The puppy care and training basics are clearly dealt with, as are techniques to curb bad behaviors. The importance of training and socialization are detailed and advice to get the puppy through the 'teen' period are touched upon. Weither you are new to the world of dogs, an experianced dog owner, or obtaining a puppy after many years of adult dog ownership you will find this a handy and easy to understand compilation of puppy care. For those thinking of adding a puppy to the family, there are sections on puppy selection, testing, and training.
