Format: Paperback
This book is beautifully illustrated and has short but useful texts for each of its subjects. It is arranged alphabetically from Abraham to Venus and includes art by many of the most famous masters of the Renaissance, Baroque, and Romantic periods. The author describes how the artists painted their subjects and in some cases explains the commissioning of the works. All of the drama of the paintings is explained in easy to follow text. Those who say they do not understand complex Bible messages or mythology will gain insight into what the stories reveal.

This may not be the type of book one picks up and reads straight through, but it will help see into the minds of the artists as they interpret their subjects. It is interesting that both Biblical stories and ancient mythology is intertwined throughout the book. This may displease Bible purists, but there are often connections in the stories that the painting masters incorporated into their works. This book stops at the Romantic period, but modern artists have continued to paint many of these same subjects. Another volume dedicated to more recent artists might add to the appeal of this book.

The book is richly illustrated with full color plates. Yet the price is reasonable and individuals or church librarians can add this to their collection without breaking the bank.

The old Masters painted with passion and perception. I wanted to learn more about them. I would advise anyone who loved art to buy this book
