Bright Stars,

This review is from: How To Read/Write a Dirty Story (Paperback)
Susie's long overdue book about her insights and experience in the world of writing and editing erotica is a welcome addition to the genre. For this editor of erotica it all rang true--the pitfalls, the joys, the rewards. And her section on the publishing industry is right on target. Susie generously shares her considerable experience writing and editing erotica, as well as other kinds of writing, with no holds barred. I read and see Susie Bright speak for inspiration and validation, and this book did it for me again.

I have always loved Susie's essays, rants, and analyses and was so glad she finally published something focused about writing as an art, a craft, and a business. In the introductions to her "Best American Erotica" collections you could get just a glimpse of what she could contribute to the artists who write erotica--a genre entered into by some of the most innovative, brave, and creative writers alive. They still need her experience and her insights, and they need this book.

Good Resource for Writing Biz, Not the Best for Erotica,

If you're looking, as I was, for a book specifically as a guide for breaking into and excelling in the world of writing erotica/porn, buy Katy Terrega's book (It's a Dirty Job...Writing Porn for Fun and Profit). In addition, buy Susie's to add to your general writing resource library. Besides, an unexpected and unwanted amount of this book being devoted to the history of erotic literature and women's lib, it IS a great source for general insiders' info on the publishing industry, marketing your material, and what it takes to be a success as an author. Susie covered the "other end" of the writing biz that most writers avoid or don't want to share the secrets and challenges of. Buy Susie's to feel you can handle what the harsh publishing industry throws your way; buy Katy's for SPECIFIC info. on writing erotica and breaking in. Now, go have fun writing.

This is the best how-to book I have ever [read]. Not just for writing, but for enhancing your erotic life, opening up to yourself, and understanding human nature. It is expertly and entertainingly written, and so fun that I read the entire thing in one afternoon! From how to read erotica aloud to how to how to get published, this book has it all. Even writing exercises, and a bit of poignancy thrown in for good measure. One of the best buys I have made in a long time.

Write On, Susie,
By A Customer
This review is from: How To Read/Write a Dirty Story (Paperback)
True to the Susie Bright tradition of self-revelation in the service of high erotic ideals, this book DELIVERS. I'm so glad she wrote this tell-all, how-to, sex-positive, personal-is-political guide to reading, writing, and living. Her expertise as the founder of "Herotica" and "Best American Erotica" collections is certainly brought to bear in these pages. I've been a student in one of her writer's workshops, and I found the my creative fires rekindled by her fresh approach once again. Her hilarious skewering of the publishing industry made me want to tilt against the windmills for own satisfaction.

I read this more for the first part of the book, the "thinking" about sex part. I'm a woman who's always been pretty frank about sexuality and sex. I'm comfortable with the subject, so Susie's essays are right up my alley because I like essays on the subject that don't come off as "childish."
Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not going to be all up in your face about sex and all that, but if you're going to talk sex with me, you'd better be prepared to talk sex like an adult and not a blushing child. Otherwise, let's talk about puppies! :D Anyhow, I like Susie's writing style. Even if she weren't the "sex goddess" of erotica, I'd still read her books. Reading this book was like reading a letter from a friend. It has an intimacy about it. Don't think that means I fall down and worship her. There are some things she believes in that my opinions differ--such as her assertion that many stories lack because they don't explore the sexuality of their characters more in the story. Yes, sex is a big part of who we are, but many writers can tell a story without delving into that area. Pretty good read. I'm going to keep this one in my collection. I thought I might release it on bookcrossing, but I guess not.
