If You're Serious About Fixing Your Credit, This Book's For You!,
This review is from: How to Repair Your Credit Score Now: Simple No Cost Methods You Can Put to Use Today (Paperback)
Jamaine Burrell's comprehensive work provides a fundamental understanding, building, and repairing your credit score. Have you ever wondered why you receive copious amounts of credit card solicitations in the mail? Why you can't qualify for a car loan or a mortgage? If so, then Burrell's book is the one for you.
In the simplest of terms, your credit score dictates a great deal of your financial future - the higher your score, the better your credit. Burrell begins by explaining the elements used to calculate your credit score and then how to go about manipulating those elements to your favor. The emphasis of Burrell's book is the importance of maintaining and monitoring your credit score, that, and understanding that there are several sources that provide credit scores including FICO, the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and the Fair and Accurate Transaction Act. Credit scores are then differentiated into either standard credit reports or investigative credit reports. In general, credit reports can be sold to creditors, lenders, and other business entities, as well as accessed online. Burrell also covers the areas that credit reports can legitimately be used for including the following: medical information; rental agreements; tenant screening; and employment histories. If your credit score needs to be fixed, Burrell's book provides helpful ways to identify building up your credit as well as methods that won't help. Additionally, these useful pieces of advice include how marriage, divorce, and/or the death of a spouse will impact your credit. Through Burrell's solid research and her ability to connect with the reader, she manages to tutor you in the tangled was of identifying credit professionals to assist you with any of your issues, preventing identify theft, and handling bankruptcy, if necessary. This book provides an excellent resource for people to begin learning about credit and preventing future mistakes or for those currently embroiled in credit problems to hopefully extricate themselves as painlessly as possible.

Good source to get back on track,

This review is from: How to Repair Your Credit Score Now: Simple No Cost Methods You Can Put to Use Today (Paperback)
I wish I had this book a few years ago. It would have saved me from a few problems I could have easily avoided, even though I thought I was Mr. Know-it-All when it came to credit and debt.
It gives you the low-down on how credit scores are figured out, the agencies that do the reporting and how you can be in trouble based on the number of accounts you have, collection actions against you, past due payments and delinquent accounts. OK, so you're faced with mounting debt. Relax. You can get back in the game by determining what is causing your growing money problems. The author explains in detail how to use debt-to-income ratio calculations to lower your debt in your monthly budget while including necessary savings in those budgets, as well as using credit counselors, negotiating a payment plan with creditors and other helpful methods. The book points out how to open safe accounts that will show potential creditors you can pay your bills and save money, and how you can correct inaccuracies in your credit information. Burrell details the different types of cards and loans to look for in order to maintain a good credit rating on your path to recovery. The more you understand credit, the better you are able to take advantage of the options available, the author explains.

Very Basic,

This review is from: How to Repair Your Credit Score Now: Simple No Cost Methods You Can Put to Use Today (Paperback)
I bought this book and "Best Credit..." by Dana Neal at the same time. I read this book after "Best Credit...", but should have read it first to get a basic understanding first. "Best Credit..." was VERY thorough and very detailed, but this gives a great overview of everything! Bottom line: read this book before any others to get an overview and basic understanding of things relating to credit.

Excellent Resource for Building, Maintaining, and Protecting Your Credit,
This review is from: How to Repair Your Credit Score Now: Simple No Cost Methods You Can Put to Use Today (Paperback)
If you're like me, you're familiar with credit reports and maybe even FICO scores. But, if you're like me, you don't know the difference between a credit report and a credit file. You don't know exactly how credit scores are calculated. And you don't know about all the other types of credit collecting and reporting vehicles used to decide whether or not you get the job or medical coverage you applied for. How to Repair Your Credit Score Now provides the answers to these and many other credit-related questions you may not even know to ask.
Burrell's depth of research is impressive. Each chapter, from "What is a Credit Score?" to "Maintaining Good Credit" provides clear, detailed explanations that make it easy to understand credit and how it impacts us. And perhaps more important, they provide the steps and resources to take an active role in building, maintaining, and protecting our credit. For example, Chapter 3, "Credit Scoring Models," explains exactly how credit scores are calculated, and Chapter 5, "Repairing Bad Credit," dispels the myths and scams some debt `repair' agencies use and provides real, concrete actions consumers can take to minimize damage from bad credit. Throughout How to Repair Your Credit Score Now, Burrell provides illustrative charts, resource contact information, and sample letters to assist you in building, monitoring, disputing, and protecting your credit information. It is an invaluable resource for any one wishing to take an active role in understanding and protecting their credit.

Practical Advice on How to Fix and Build Credit,
By Xiao Ka (Moline, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Repair Your Credit Score Now: Simple No Cost Methods You Can Put to Use Today (Paperback)
If you know someone who's struggling to get their finances in order, someone graduating from college and starting a new job, or someone who just got their first credit card, they would be a great candidate to read the book How to Repair Your Credit Score Now by Jamaine Burrell. This book is easy to read and gives practical advice. The advice in this book is something that everybody should know if they have a credit card, are planning on buying a new car with a loan, or getting a mortgage in the future (which covers just about everyone).
How to Repair Your Credit Score Now gives readers all of the information that they need to understand what a credit score is, how it's determined, and how it will affect your life. The first part of the book focuses on what credit scores are, how you can pick up a free credit report every year, and how to judge if your credit is good or not. If you have bad credit, this book will help you to repair it, so that you can get a mortgage with a lower interest rate or qualify for a bank loan. If you haven't used credit cards, applied for loans, or built credit up in another way, this book will help you to do it the right way. There's more to building credit than just getting more and more credit cards, and if you do it the right way the first time, you won't have to spend years repairing your credit. Another thing this book focuses on is how to keep your identity safe from thieves, which is becoming a more and more common crime. Finally, Burrell discusses the last resort in fixing your credit: filing for bankruptcy. I would give this book 5 stars, because it's full of practical advice, isn't preachy, and is a book that even people who don't have a lot of money should read. We all use money in our daily lives, and most of us pay for some of our purchases by credit. You may not think that building a good credit history is important now, but after reading this book you will understand the importance of keeping an eye on your credit and learning how to build and protect it.

A surprisingly good review of a difficult subject,
This review is from: How to Repair Your Credit Score Now: Simple No Cost Methods You Can Put to Use Today (Paperback)
If you think that this book is about repairing your own adverse credit history only, you will be pleasantly surprised. This is probably the most comprehensive book on credit scores I have come across in recent years, that covers the full subject in an extremely informative, yet compact, and easy-reading 290 pages. Credit scores reflect your financial behavior - whether you borrow sensibly or not and whether you have a plan for using the money to your best advantage. It is a game - how to establish your "reputation" as someone who manages his personal or company's cash flow, which in turn makes it easy for him to borrow more at lower interest rates.
Jamaine Burrell takes you all the way step-by-step: from understanding the basics of credit reports and scores, the models used in scoring (e.g. FICO), a 45-page chapter packed with advice on how to repair your credit and what to do if you have hit the lowest point. The last chapter on how to maintain a good credit history concludes this compact, well-written book that will be on my reference shelf for a long time. Even for the credit professional, this book is a delightful compendium for advising those with a credit problem. With the rise in bankruptcies, this book should be recommended early in people's careers for responsible handling of one's financial affairs. I wish I had bought it for my son's thirteenth birthday - long before his irresponsible spending sprees reflected on his credit report.

A to Z of Credit Repair,
This review is from: How to Repair Your Credit Score Now: Simple No Cost Methods You Can Put to Use Today (Paperback)
This book is an A to Z on everything about credit. It is jam-packed full of tips, statistics and definitions that is sure to help even the most knowledgeable readers. It starts with the basics and dissects the elements of your credit report and educates you on the credit scoring (I didn't know there was more than one score). The author tells you how to get copies of your credit report and score and even provides statistics so you know how you rate among others.
This book delves into everything that affects your credit; not just the obvious loans and credit cards but things I never thought about. It covers bad credit, its consequences, and how to deal with debt collectors. The focus of the book is repairing bad credit which it does in detail. The author gives valuable advice on consumer counseling services, debt management plans and bankruptcy. Not only is the technical information covered but there are also useful tips on keeping down expenses and setting financial goals. An entire chapter is dedicated to maintaining good credit as well as a chapter on identity theft. Burrell's writing is very thorough but it can get wordy and too technical in some places. With that said though, the subject matter is complex and everything is covered in detail. This book is not only for those who want to repair their credit but for anyone who wants to know the ins and outs of credit.
