Book Description

June 1989
This book describes how to document Native American ancestry before official BIA records are created. Although mainly geared to the Five Civilized Tribes, this work stands as a helpful guide for researching " A Little Bit of Indian" in all other circumstances. "The outstanding merit of this book is its documentation. Sources are constantly cited for facts presented. The information is interesting and is easily readable. There are two articles cited about the physical aspects of Indians. Dental Detective Work by Dr. Christy G. Turner 11. of Arizona State University, and Cowboys and Indians: Left vs. Right, quoting Dr. Allen Chuck Ross. A phone call by this writer to Arizona State University, in Tempe, lead to a copy of "Right Brain Orientation" by Dr. Allen Chuck Ross, as published in Journal of American Indian Education - Special Issue, Aug. 1989, by Arizona State University. Dr. Turner was kind enough to give reference to his article that appeared in Scientific American, Feb. 1989. The saying, "I've got a Little Indian in my background" is a familiar one to many researchers. To those with that little bit being Cherokee this work gives hope and sources: 160 of them." Reviewer: V.P. Ewart, Genealogical Librarian/Law Librarian, Cherokee Family Researcher #6 (Summer and Fall, 1991): 4-5. Available from Donna J. Williams, editor, 576 N. 38th St., Mesa, AZ 85205. The author covers:
* Factors, Traders, Packmen, Explorers
* specific mixed marriages in print
* names of mixed bloods in print
* early Indian commissioners, agents
* locations of settlements
* Cherokee history and migrations
* characteristics, genetic markers
* traditional values

An extensive bibliography keyed by number to each paragraph in the book, gives the reader an exact place to go for further research. And 40 different settlement and migration maps are provided.
