Ok I have to admit that the title [...] in...Great job Steve. I heard this book referred to in a presentation and I picked it up the next day. I read it while I was traveling to speak at a retreat for a board of directors, and it had a HUGE impact on me. 2.0 out of 5 stars A bit preachier than I expected
I've never read anything by Stephen Farrar, and I didn't bother researching his writing style before writing the book. Judging by the title of this book, I expected something along the lives of writing by Donald MIller or David Foster, but that is not the case.

As somebody who lived for a long time in darkness before coming to the light, I can appreciate...

Ok I have to admit that the title [...] in...Great job Steve. I heard this book referred to in a presentation and I picked it up the next day. I read it while I was traveling to speak at a retreat for a board of directors, and it had a HUGE impact on me. I read a lot of books and very few have had the deep impact that this book has had on me.

Steve really focuses in on the power of our choices early in life and the impact they have on us as we get older. I was 28 when I read this book and it was good to get affirmation on some of the right moves I have made, but it also gave me some very needed direction on some of the choices that were still outstanding in my life.

I have decided that I am going to give this book to every college graduate that I know. That is the most beneficial time to read this book. But you know what else I have done. I gave it to my father-in-law who is in his 50's and he said that it was greatly impactful for him even though he is a decade past 40.

If you are trying to decide whether or not to buy this book. I would say this. Stop wondering and BUY IT! You will not be sorry.

This book is perfect for small groups, especially High School and College Age. The kids in my group are actually reading this one. (A first in over 20 books we've gone through) It is well written like all of Dr. Farrar's books. IF you have or work with teenagers this book and Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University will help prepare them to avoid the major pitfalls of adult life.

I bought this book for my 21 year old son, and read it before giving it to him. This is a wonderful book and I recommend it for all to read who want to have a successful life and marriage.

2.0 out of 5 stars A bit preachier than I expected, December 8, 2010

I've never read anything by Stephen Farrar, and I didn't bother researching his writing style before writing the book. Judging by the title of this book, I expected something along the lives of writing by Donald MIller or David Foster, but that is not the case.

As somebody who lived for a long time in darkness before coming to the light, I can appreciate the biblical-based teachings. However, I found it hard to get get past the second chapter due to all of the biblical and overtly religious anecdotes that comprised the first four chapters. I didn't feel that any of the questions mentioned in the product description were actually answered until chapter five (choosing a career), and again in chapter six ( romantic relationships ).

The main thing, I guess, is that the book seems to be written for people who are already living their lifestyles according to the principles within the book. In short, the intended audience won't really need to read the book, and those who would benefit the most probably won't get past the first chapter.

I had hoped to give it to my oldest, who is graduating high school, but after reading it myself, I know it won't get read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing and True!, June 23, 2010

I have read this book after being introduced during a men's retreat/conference.
I can attest Steve has journeyed through his 40's with great spirit and guidance from God.
You will laugh, cry a little, cringe a little, and eventually after soul searching, re-dedicate your life from your sins.
This is a must read for all men!

This short book is one of the very best I've seen for helping young people make good decisions! In a homorous and direct way - the author speaks to males and females about making choices that will NOT ruin lives. I have purchased dozens of these to give to youth and young adults!

I read this book a few years ago and since then have purchased it many times to give to either a teenager/young adult or to the parents of one. This book should be mandatory reading for any young person in the 13-21 year old bracket. No one wants to live a ruined life. This book tells you how to avoid that happening. The book is well written with plenty of humor and great stories. I HIGHLY recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Priority Read for Teenagers and Young Adults, January 18, 2008
This review is from: How to Ruin Your Life By 40 (Paperback)
We live in a world and a culture that exhorts and encourages at every turn for each person to build a temple to self in our hearts that will require us to bow down and worship the self beyond all else. you may look no further than the behavior of those around you, news, TV programming, billboards, advertisements, politicians, etc to find massive evidence that the idolatry of the temple to the self is firmly entreached and embrased. Jesus calls us to die to self and place all sins, cares, and concerns at the foot of the cross so that we may be loving and effective servants to each other, and hence to Jesus. for it is in serving each other in love that we serve Christ. If you have teenagers or young adults this is a must read for them and all mothers and fathers. do not hesitate. we are not guranteed our next breath. start tearing down the temple of self by reading this book that provides pratical wisdom. 3-hours to read.
