Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

"...This book is a simple statement that we are all called to holiness....To a nation of people who are afraid to make a commitment to anything because something better might come along, it speaks of a commitment that rests in the awareness of Christ's call. "This is a book that one seeking a more intimate relationship with God will read again and again."

--From the Foreword by Msgr.James Peterson "Mary Best has provided something we all need: a clear map for the spiritual journey to set out boldly in the direction of holiness. Not simply about how to become holy, this book gets to the heart of what true holiness means, beginning with humility. In the plain language of our daily experiences and rooted in Scripture, Best's description of the steps toward deeper intimacy with God outline a series of life-transforming responses to God's loving initiative....Like the best of books on spirituality, How Shall We Become Holy? offers practical suggestions that are possible to achieve and profound in their effects."

--Mark Neilsen, Associate Editor"Living Faith"

More About the Author

I was born in Orangeville, Ohio, shortly after my parents lost their farm. My father was engaged in construction work at the time, but farming was in his blood. When I was four, my parents bought a piece of property and built a four room house. There were no amenities for the first eight years or so until electricity was coaxed down the gravel road on which we and our neighbors lived. From these humble beginnings, my siblings and I lived the American dream. From the time I was seven, I knew I wanted to be a religious sister, entered the convent when I was 18 and left when I was 54, grateful to God for the blessings I received, but also knowing that it would be a psychological death for me to remain as I was. My story should be a comfort to those who have seen their lifetime dreams crumble, whether in a marriage or in business. When we trust in God and try to follow God's will, there is life after failure, and all that went before is to help us rise to something better. "We know that all things work for good for those who love God" (Romans 8:28).

I graduated from Loyola University, New Orleans, with a Master of Pastoral Studies when I was 69. I've been editor of two award-winning magazines, contributor to Living Faith and My Daily Life, the author of a syndicated column called Catholic Singles, and two books: How Shall We Become Holy, Thirty Steps to Intimacy with God, and Seventy Septembers, a detailed history of the work of the Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters in Mississippi from 1905 to 1975. I've had my own radio show, Reflections of a Catholic lay woman.

5.0 out of 5 stars Changing my life one day at a time, March 25, 2006
This review is from: How Shall We Become Holy?: 30 Steps to Intimacy with God (Paperback)
The first time I read the book, I read it completely in one sitting and enjoyed it very much. I have re-read the book several times, one chapter a day, and by using the examples given, and meditating on the scripture messages, I am building a more intimate relationship with God. It is a wonderful book for someone who wants to be more holy, but doesn't really know how to go about it. It is a must read for everyone who wants to live a better, more meaningful life.
