Great Advice for Single Women,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: How to Shop for a Husband: A Consumer Guide to Getting a Great Buy on a Guy (Hardcover)
It's smart, practical (and hysterical) advice for all the women out there
who think they want to be married and should be married, but aren't yet. I should know, I was one of them. While thankfully I did manage to get married, I'm only sorry this book didn't come out 20 years ago so that I would have learned these practical lessons earlier. For all the single women out there who are seeking to get married, read Janice's book immediately and really, really follow her advice. It's not cynical, just a smart way of looking at things, and overcoming obstacles, like being too picky, all of which seem related to fear of intimacy and commitment. If I agree to this one, will I miss out on an even better possibility? This type of thinking can lead to permanent singlehood, unless the cycle is broken. Charles Grodin's advice to Janice about what is important is very important: read it every day, in fact copy it and put it on your bathroom mirror.

Love it!!,

Funny, smart, and exceedingly down to earth. This book is filled with real stories and useful advice. It's like a consumer guide to actually finding a husband: what makes a marriage work, what makes people attracted to each other, and how to really "close the deal". You may think this sounds like a fun-only book--but you'd be wrong! Lieberman says she was sick of hearing "why aren't you married?" So she set out to research what the experts have to say about long-term marriages and shares the information. Really, this is much more informative than those gimmicky books, while still being fun. I love the story about the girl who mis-dials and finds a guy . . . who winds up not being the man of her dreams. And caveat emptor couldn't apply more aptly than to the relationship area.

A Man's Perspective,
By Howard M. Aubrey (New York, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Shop for a Husband: A Consumer Guide to Getting a Great Buy on a Guy (Hardcover)
I loved this book so much I bought 5 copies--5--and gave them to all my ex-girlfriends. They could really use some of the advice in this book. I'm not kidding. It's kind of weird how well the rules that consumer experts use also apply to the dating world. My favorite is: "make him think he's doing the shopping". How true that is! I don't think my ex-girlfriends will mind--we're still good friends--and I really think they can benefit from the no-nonsense approach that Lieberman advocates. If you know a girl who should be married and isn't, this might be the book that does the job for her. Also, if you have a friend/daughter/relative who keeps getting scammed, or meets all the wrong guys, or doesn't know how to close the deal, this is the book that will teach them that caveat emptor applies in dating too. And if anyone out there knows five nice, upstanding gentlemen . . . .

You can't find a better buy! "How To Shop For A Husband" combines an abundance of logical, practical and personal advice AND backs it up with the scientific data on the best way to find a mate. Ladle in a large helping of chicken soup fun and humor and you have an absolutely terrific read. The 'how-to' is filtered through so many anecdotal stories - you will laugh out loud. Such a fun book and I can't wait to share it with my friends AND start doing the homework! This book is the real deal.

How to Shop for a Husband may sound like a fun gift item--which it is--but it is also filled with research, facts, and wisdom that will help anyone trying to figure out why they are having such a hard time finding a spouse. This is really a smart guide to romance--it is perfect for all those people who think that when it comes to love, logic and reason are out the window. Not so! Lieberman shows that's why so many women out there are getting"scammed".She also talks about how people nowadays are way too picky in everything, including in the selection of a prospective spouse. The section on reasons people won't date each other is hysterical. I highly recommend this book and think it should be the next"He's Just Not that Into You"--movie and all!!

What a great and fun tool for anyone over 30 who may not have had the best experiences with dating. Even though some parts are written very tongue in cheek, this book is very informative and based on research of what works in relationships. With the high divorce rate in this country, we can take all the help we can get to find the right partner. Great job Janice!!

Good concept but poorly developed,
By Sir Readalot (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Shop for a Husband: A Consumer Guide to Getting a Great Buy on a Guy (Hardcover)
I was drawn to the book because I liked the idea of "shopping" for a husband: for me, the shopping analogy translates the traditional advice "there are plenty of fish in the sea" into a practical form. However, I found the actual execution of the idea lacking. First, Ms. Lieberman advocates being "choosy" over being "picky." She claims that by the time she met her husband-to-be, she had learned to be choosy rather than picky - but still got everything that she originally wanted in a man when she was being picky. Now I understand that Ms. Lieberman would not want to diss her husband in a national publication, but honestly, how is that advice helpful?! To really illustrate her idea, Ms. Lieberman would have to tell the readers exactly how she compromised - but it would be marriage suicide to do that! Also, I agree with another reviewer that Ms. Lieberman's take on internet dating is naive. It boils down to "Just give it a shot. Tons of people are doing it." In this day and age, internet daters need more sophisticated advice. Lastly, don't purchase the audiobook version of this book unless you like being nagged for several hours. I listened to a preview, thought I could handle her flinty voice, and discovered that I was wrong. Don't make the same mistake I did!

Fun & Helpful!,

This book was both fun and informative. If you want to get married and are having trouble finding someone, I think this book offers a lot of perspective. And reading Janice Lieberman's advice is like listening to a good friend tell you what you might be doing wrong. It doesn't trivialize love and marriage, but in an entertaining way, it gets your head straight.
Sometimes love and marriage just doesn't come naturally and you need to have a plan. I totally enjoyed it and am going to use some of Ms. Lieberman's tips. There are also interviews with the Today Show folks and other celebrities, and what they think it takes to be successful in finding someone. I really recommend it.

This is a great read with no nonsense advice in trying to find your mate for life. I have recommended it to all my single friends and plan to keep a couple of extra copies on hand. Look forward to more "shopping" advice books from Janice and Bonnie!

I have always been a big fan of Janice Lieberman. I have followed her career from when she was the host of Steals and Deals, then on Good Morning America, and now on the TODAY SHOW. She is like one of us. It was so much fun to read her book. I recommend it to everyone, whether you are shopping or not.
