3.0 out of 5 stars Nice puzzle book, but...., July 21, 2008
By
Grass Tiger (Wadsworth, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Solve IQ Puzzles (Paperback)
This book has a wide variety of puzzles, set up like an IQ test. It tells you how long to set your timer for and you complete as many puzzles in that section in that time. In the back there are answers for each section and says, "Each correct answer scores one point" assigning a value of "Average, Good, Very Good, and Exceptional".

I would say the author's philosophy is summed up in these two paragraphs on page 11.

"It is accepted that IQ is hereditary and remains constant throughout life, and therefore, it is not possible to improve your actual IQ.

Paradoxically it is, however, possible to improve your performance on IQ tests by practicing the many different types of question, and learning to recognize the recurring themes."

In a 13 page section entitled "About IQ Testing", he lists 6 types of questions (Analogy, Antonyms, Anagrams, Classification Synonyms, and Calculation and logic) and gives one example of each with a brief explanation of how to solve it.

So, if the way you improve your scores on IQ tests is by practice on similar questions, then any book on IQ puzzles should be good. This book is not as big as many on the market for similar prices and has similar puzzles. If you've read other books on how to solve IQ puzzles, then I really doubt this book will offer you anything new, except a little more practice. In fact, there is so little that it teaches that you could easily pick this up in a bookstore and read those bits in a few minutes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bad Title, OK book, November 8, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: How to Solve IQ Puzzles (Paperback)
This book DOES NOT teach you how to solve IQ puzzles. In the beginning, it simply gives you a general overview of the types of questions found on common IQ tests. The rest of the book, the vast amjority of it, is simply IQ exercises with answers, again not answers that show you how to solve anything.

1.0 out of 5 stars Replete with errors, April 12, 2009
This review is from: How to Solve IQ Puzzles (Paperback)
This book is full of errors. Some of the answers are wrong (e.g question 6 on page 80, to add to the instances mentioned by other reviewers). Page 81 features duplicate shapes printed to the right and above the question. I don't think the editing was wrong - I think it wasn't edited at all. There are plenty of alternative books to get, so opt for something else.
