There is some interesting advice on this tape but not for Taekwon-Do nor any other kind of Karate sparring. The instructor wants you to face your opponent in a forward stance similar to boxing but never explains how this is of benefit when fighting. No one should stand that open when your opponent will be throwing combinations of punches and kicks. His advice is how to defend against a single kick or punch. When was the last time someone threw a single kick or punch against you? He wants you to open your fighting stance so you are in a similar style to a boxer... just try kicking from that position. There is no way to kick from that position and no way to effectively use a side kick. Side kicks are the most effective kick in Taekwon-do/Karate and to lose that is to be effectively shut down.

I will admit that some of the blocking advice is practical and should be practiced when both sparring or fighting. This is not worth the price of the dvd/tape.

Please look at the reviews of the other reviewers of this dvd/tape. They are just giving positive reviews to everything this company puts out. Please be careful with reviews and always check what else the reviewer has written.

Do not buy. There are better TKD/Karate instructional tapes/dvds.

Robert Lyons explains and instructs theory, footwork, stances, kicks, punches and combinations in the Tae-Kwon-Do system. He shows how to use this knowledge to gain advantage in tournaments by using a wider range of skills gained from other martial arts styles, while still adhering to the Tae-Kwon-Do rules of the tournament.

This video gives you detailed training in how to compete in a tournament. But what I like best is that Robert Lyons gives no-nonsense, practical advice about how to spar effectively in any situation. His methods are based on common sense rather than on "style". He shows you how to do each technique as he instructs a black belt and uses different angles so you can see everything clearly. This is great training for sparring in general - not just for Tae-Kwon-Do. Yet you do learn a great deal about the difference between Tae-Kwon-Do and other martial arts, its advantages and disadvantages. I would highly recommend this tape.
