What a hoot!,
By Boise P Miller (Central Pennsylvania) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Speak Dutchified English, Volume 1 (Paperback)
Having grown up in Pennsylvania Dutch Country, I find that this is one book that I can relate to very well (or ferry vell). This book really hits the nail on the head when in comes to the PA Dutch trying to speak a language that just must not be in their genes to speak. I never really thought about it before, but the way of talking described in these 96 pages is exactly what I have grown up listening to. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a good laugh about people who talk funny and don't know it.

I bought this without reading the description carefully enough. I was looking for a book of the Pennsylvania Dutch words and phrases that I've been accustomed to hearing during my lifetime residence in PA. This book is a list of (supposedly funny) mispronunciations.
An example: Hunkrey: famished; starved. Despite my error in selecting this book, which is self-described as an introduction to the PA Dutch accent, I can hardly imagine anyone of even average intelligence enjoying it. Sorry.

I suppose that some people are just born without funny bones. I liked the book and have heard most of what is said in the colloquial dialect around this part of Pennsylvania. Maybe it is an inside joke. Really don't care, but I thought that it was lots of fun. I'm looking forward to getting the second volume.
