4.0 out of 5 stars Workers unite!
This book is excellent for the burnt-out job seeker wanting to foil the jerks in Corporate America by beating them at their own dishonest games. Excellent advice for creating the credentials to get your foot in the door. Read and follow the information in reverse, and get a better than average job! Are you tired of the LIES you get from job interviewers who try to...

3.0 out of 5 stars Common Sense?
Having been on both sides of the hiring process, I decided to read this book to see if I too had been duped. I don't know if the hard cover (if one exists) is longer and covers more material but I was not impressed with the contents.

To me the things presented here seem to be common sense with a dash of parannoia thrown in. While the author does make some...

Excellent advice for creating the credentials to get your foot in the door. Read and follow the information in reverse, and get a better than average job! Are you tired of the LIES you get from job interviewers who try to get you to take a crappy, low-paying job, such as "We are growing fast, you'll move up quickly", "We always try to promote from within before looking on the outside", "The hourly base pay is low but you'll double it with commissions", "We are flexible with schedules", "We have an open door policy". Need I go on? Quit trying to beat them, JOIN THEM!

By A Customer
Dr. Ford has nailed down 99% of the scams and frauds that phonies use to try to get jobs they shouldn't have. This book is absolutely neccessary for anyone who has the job of trying to protect a hiring organization from phonies. It should be on the desk of all HR people as well as independent recruiters, counselors, and instructors. Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth a million $$$ to an employer!, September 18, 1999
By A Customer
Already this book has helped me to screen out two potential disasters. They were very good, but I spotted their games with the help of Dr. Ford's book. It may not be worth a million, but thousands for sure. You wont believe what phonies are getting away with. I'm going to memorize this thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY helpful! Every hiring manager should have it., December 22, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: How to Spot a Phony Resume (2nd Ed) (Paperback)
This book has to be the best hiring aid I ever had. I've been using it for over a year and just got two more copies of the new 2nd edition for my department managers. It will help you screen out the dopes and liars, and I tell you this from experience. I could not believe the con games I have uncovered using this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A terrific countermeasure, March 18, 2001

This review is from: How to Spot a Phony Resume (2nd Ed) (Paperback)
As an employer, I can say with no reservation that this is one very useful book. Trying to hire the right people has been a headache for me for years, but with this book, I can get rid of the phonies right up front. It really is effective, showing how to see things that don't make sense right away, and how to quickly check suspicious entries. If you hire people, you will find this book a good resource.

This review is from: How to Spot a Phony Resume (2nd Ed) (Paperback)
Having been on both sides of the hiring process, I decided to read this book to see if I too had been duped. I don't know if the hard cover (if one exists) is longer and covers more material but I was not impressed with the contents.

To me the things presented here seem to be common sense with a dash of parannoia thrown in. While the author does make some good points, it seems that any of the things to look out for can be true of people who are not trying to scam a hiring manager or firm. What would have made this book 4 stars would have been examples of both blantant phony resumes (and cover letters since they are touched upon as well) and questionable ones (those that appear to be 85% or more truth) with a disection of each as well as "quick tips". A 5 star rating would have included a list of agencies or starting points to check on parts of resumes, e.g. DegreeCheck can verify aspects of a person education for a nominal fee (less than $15). The author does include some basic guidelines and a few case studies (using the term loosely) that will likely provide a decent base for someone who can do the leg work required.

This book makes a good start for someone new to the game or someone that just wants to check that they are doing the right things but offers no information that couldn't be gleaned from asking people you know who have been in the position to evaluate and hire. And despite its cover offers no "secrets" about fake resumes or other supporting documents.
