The graphic design industry has undergone enormous changes in the past couple of decades resulting in a steady decline in the quality of print design. Basic print knowledge, that made our industry a great profession and was so in demand in the past, is no longer being passed along to the current generation of designers or taught in design schools. Along with uploading and downloading, this precious knowledge has got lost in the mix and will soon be gone like many other crafts in our industry. It’s a sad fact that most young talented designers today, no longer possess that professional edge which makes a true print designer a real professional.

How to Succeed as a Graphic Designer was written with the objective of correcting this situation by making this precious knowledge available to all graphic designers. Aimed at the developing graphic designer, our book was designed to add 20 years of on-the-job professional knowledge regardless of their experience or skill level through our insights, instructions and teachings. This book is about the true business of graphic design. This book is not a software course nor will it teach you Adobe Creative Suite. It will give you hard facts about this business. This book goes way beyond telling you step-by-step what you need to do to succeed.

This book was designed to make you more valuable to potential employers, to current clients and to the design industry. It’s the kind of information you can’t get from schools, colleagues or your friends. It’s the kind of knowledge that a Master passes on to his apprentice. If you are at a point in your career where you feel you are stagnating, have been left behind and are feeling disappointed with your design career expectations… then this book is for you. Designers Insights is committed to building up your fundamental design knowledge and enhancing your day-to-day workplace performance. 3.0 out of 5 stars Great quotes and some good insights December 10, 2012

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The best parts of this book are the quotes by some of the 20th century's greatest designers--I want to make a letterpress poster out of every single one of them. The author(s) also offer a lot of great insights about the realities of the client/designer relationship and how to succeed in today's marketplace. There were a few problems that detracted from the book, however: 1) Unfortunately, they undermine their own credibility when they write about how critical it is to proof your work then proceed to include more typos and grammatical miscues than I've ever seen in a single book. "...He (the client) was expecting it to be perfect, not sloppy. He thought he got the best design firm to work on his brochure." I wish the authors took the same approach with their readers. 2) I got tired of the pretentious tone of the writing. By their tone, you'd assume they invented graphic design itself, which grew tiring. I'm sure they're very accomplished, but this is over-the-top. 3) Their bias against design education was surprising. They apparently didn't have the same experience with their design education as I had. They write, "Many college professors teach because they were not good enough to succeed in the business world in the first place. ...You will rarely see a talented designer teaching fulltime. That would be a great waste of his valuable creative time." This seems to be a pretty short-sighted view of why professors choose to teach and dismisses the many great designers who have chosen to give back to their profession by passing on their knowledge and skills to a new generation of designers. Paul Rand, Bradbury Thompson, Alvin Lustig, Meredith Davis, Johanna Drucker, Ed Fella, Wolfgang Weingart, Armin Hofmann, many of whom are quoted in this book, were all amazing designers AND educators. 5.0 out of 5 stars I recommend it. March 15, 2012

At first, I was simply looking for something to read to deepen my artistic work. I expected nothing. Then, I read the comments and this book drew my attention. I'm now halfway in the book and I can assure you that I totally support the others' comments. Even if Graphic Design seemed to have no secrets for me after 15 years in the business, I learnt a lot with this book. I recommend it.

More About the Author

We are a group of veteran design professionals with years of experience and we call ourselves Designers Insights. The idea behind creating a web site and writing a book came from the fact that we were noticing over the past decades, a steady decline in the quality of print design. We think this is simply because basic print design knowledge is no longer being passed along to the current generation of designers.

Why? Well to begin with, the graphic design basics are no longer being taught in schools. Secondly, along with uploading and downloading our designs, this precious knowledge has got lost in the mix and will soon be gone like many other crafts in our industry. We felt it was urgent to act now because losing this craftsmanship would be a real tragedy for all graphic designers.

That's why Designers Insights thought the timing was perfect and we would correct this by making available to every graphic designer this basic print knowledge, which was previously passed from master to apprentice, by launching a website and by combining our years of on-the-job professional knowledge in a book. Our intention with the website was to provide creative inspiration by showcasing today's best designers and to create a truly one-of-a-kind collection of graphic design resources that we've carefully-researched, simplified, condensed and gathered in one convenient place for daily review. This information will be of real value in your day-to-day job regardless of where you practice graphic design on the globe. The main objective with our site and book is to preserve the skills and knowledge that made graphic design a great profession in the first place.

Our book How to Succeed as a Graphic Designer was written with the objective of adding 20 years of on-the-job professional knowledge to any designer regardless of their experiences or skill level. This is especially important today, since a lot of graphic designers are freelancing and don't have the opportunity of being part of a professional creative team and to really live and feel what it's like to work in a studio environment, interacting with creative people, clients, sharing and developing ideas, and growing daily creatively.

We have achieved this by making this valuable, easy-to-understand information free and accessible to everyone on our website at www.designersinsights.com. Our mission will continue by sharing our passion, by preserving high standards of design, by offering education and training, by providing professional knowledge along with up-to-date resources and last, but most important... by showcasing creative inspiration.
