From Booklist
In Newton's snappy collection of case histories of death and destruction done in service to the deity, some focus on individual zealots and others on larger targets, be they organizations (e.g., the Ku Klux Klan and the Latter-day Saints, or Mormons, who qualify on the basis of their unfortunate former doctrine of blood atonement) or topics denominated by such chapter titles as "Gay Bashing," "Religious Wars," and "Inquisition." Neither exhaustive nor comprehensive, the dryly witty collection offers sly entertainment along with its collocation of information that exerts a particularly grim appeal. Deeds are recounted, motivations noted, and names named. Many of the deeds were done hopefully, to please a specific god or guru, and others were committed by clergy or their ilk. A fine addition to true-crime and also, perhaps, religion reading and reference shelves. Mike Tribby
