5.0 out of 5 stars The Warfield becomes Church
Along with it's companion CD set: "Jerry Garcia Band" this CD is the best example of solid and well performed 90's era live Jerry. This is Jerry, healthy, happy and leading a fine band at the Warfield Theater on Market Street, San Francisco in 1990. A live: "Cats Under the Stars" would have been worth the cover charge, but adding: "Like a Road","Gomorrah","Tears of Rage"...

2.0 out of 5 stars Unnecessary
I'm very surprised at all the glowing reviews given to this release. The 1991 Jerry Garcia Band double CD is a classic but this release falls far short of my expectations. Beginners would be wise to start with something else. Of all the wonderful recordings that are available, it sounds as if these selections were made from "off" nights. Vocally, Garcia...

Along with it's companion CD set: "Jerry Garcia Band" this CD is the best example of solid and well performed 90's era live Jerry. This is Jerry, healthy, happy and leading a fine band at the Warfield Theater on Market Street, San Francisco in 1990. A live: "Cats Under the Stars" would have been worth the cover charge, but adding: "Like a Road","Gomorrah","Tears of Rage" and "Think" really makes this release something special!

In this edition of the Jerry Garcia Band, Mr. Garcia is joined by John Kahn on bass guitar (thank you for bringing him up in this mix) David Kemper on drums (Both David & John played with the acoustic Garcia Band as well) Jackie LaBranch & Gloria Jones: vocals and Melvin Seals on keyboards. This band is soulful on the ballads, and rocks like a big fun beast on the upbeat tunes.

There are comments regarding the sound quality. As an 80's tape-trader that has heard his share of audience cassettes, this CD sounds really warm, and that isn't easy to achieve in this digital age. With ten songs included on this and 77 minutes of this great music, this is essential Jerrymusic. Get this one whilst it's still available.

This Cd has tremendous power and energy. You hear Jerry pouring his heart out. The vocals are rough The guitar playing is out of this world. John Kahn is also the most unheard of bass player ever. His playing along side Jerry is fantastic. Check out Jerry's solos on Think and Tore up Over You. You will be shaking you head in disbelief. This is a treasure and a gift no doubt about it.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars aren't really enough., January 13, 2001

Jerry in the Warfield Theater, that just about says it all. In a lot of ways it was a 2nd home to Jerry and it is there, arguably, that he was most comfortable and focused, at least in a concert setting.

This CD is incredible. It has the best of Jerry's emotional depth but lacks the psychedelic arrangements that lose so many non-deadheads.

There's some complicated leads, some amazingly quick picking, Jerry's innately soulful singing and the incredibly rich throaty soulful sound of Seals' Hammond Organ.

A lot of music get 5 ratings out of kindness, this one really is a true 5 out of 5.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Jerry Garcia Band In All Its Glory, February 2, 2006
This review is from: How Sweet It Is (Audio CD)
I don't understand how people get off saying that this album is made of bad cuts and sounds like it was recorded in the crowd. Nothing could be farther from the truth, this is sonically better then anything i've ever heard from the dead, altho i love live recordings of the dead. this is something different, a hard rocking little bit of the Jerry Garcia Band. Lots of improvisation, but in a more structured and straight ahead rock sort of way then the usual dead stuff. I can't reccomend this album enough, its grrrrrrrreat!

Guaranteed: you will not be dissappointed with this music. All the musicians on the CD are exceptional and allow Jerry to shine. The organ in particular is exceptional. Enjoy!

THE MORE YOU YOU LISTEN TO JERRY'S SOLO EFFORTS, THE MORE YOU SEPARATE JERRY FROM THE DEAD. HE WILL EVENTUALLY BE REGARDED AS ONE OF THE TOP 3 ARTISTS OF OUR TIME. AS FOR THIS EFFORT, "TEARS OF RAGE" IS INCOMPARABLE. JUST LISTEN. THIS CD RANKS WITH "SHADY GROVE" (ALTHOUGH ENTIRELY DIFFERENT)AS ONE OF HIS BEST. HE HONESTLY BRINGS TEARS TO MY EYES. PLEASE LISTEN.

5.0 out of 5 stars They don't play them like this anymore, August 23, 1998

Jerry and the Band rocked many a night at the Warfield. This CD beautifully captures their energy and musicianship. I loved the haunting readings of Like A Road and Tears of Rage. But there's not a weak track here at all, and Jerry's guitar work is top notch throughout. And the rest of the band can play a bit too. If you like this one, you'll also like the other Jerry Band live CDs.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Essence of Jerry, September 20, 2011
This review is from: How Sweet It Is (Audio CD)
This CD is a bit ballsier and more soulful than the first release. The title track shoots out of the speakers like a ray of sunshine, while the groove on "That's What Love Will Make You Do " is as deep as a fjord! "Someday Baby" shows Jerry digging deeply into the blues. I lost my first copy when my car got totalled, and I'm on hear now in order to replace it - it's a must-have CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars How Sweet It Is by the Jerry Garcia Band, June 15, 2011

I always considered my self a Deadhead, but it turns out that it was Jerry that I really liked. It was his guitar playing, like liquid gold, that shines through. I like the way he emphasized individual notes, crisp and clear.

5.0 out of 5 stars There Will Never Be Another, January 15, 2004
This review is from: How Sweet It Is (Audio CD)
Jerry Garcia was certainly a rare treat to the musical world, and this CD is just a small, yet outstanding, glimpse into that world. His guitar solo on Gomorrah is achingly beautiful and in my honest opinion make the purchasing of the CD worthwhile. That's What Love Will Make You Do showcases Jerry's upbeat side and put's a smile on my face every time, plus it is just some awesome jamming! And Like A Road will give you chills. Every song on here is great, with Jerry's guitar sounding more like an angelic voice than a music instrument, as usual.

Do yourself a favor. Pick up this CD and it will help you envision a world where the musical background of a generation is not dictated by American Idol. God bless you, Jerry!
