Not as great as the reviews say,
By Molly May (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How Sweet It Is Without the Sugar: Delicious Desserts for Diabetics and Others (Paperback)
I just wanted to lend another perspective to the reviews written here for this book because I bought this book based on those reviews and was very disappointed. The majority of the recipes call for sugar substitutes such as Sugar Twin or Equal, which is okay, but I was expecting more recipes involving natural sweeteners, like juices. A lot of the recipes are not really recipes - for example, fruit jam roll-ups are simply refrigerated crescent rolls with no-sugar jam and nuts - wow, I needed a recipe book for that? Also, the recipe instructions are annoyingly vague - I can make up my own recipe and estimate and correct for, but when I purchase a cookbook, I expect exact and detailed measurements and instructions. Overall, it certainly isn't a 5-star book, and I just wanted to write this review so other people thinking of buying this book would not be disappointed when they got it and tried the recipes. I wish I would have looked for a Splenda cookbook instead.

No sugar - but lots of white flour,

I was disappointed that most of these recipes still use refined white flour or cake flour. These refined carbohydrates can spike blood sugar too, just like sugar does. Probably the only recipes I'll be able to use are the ones for custards, etc.

The best desserts I have ever tasted!,
By Bernadette Tyrrell (New York, New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How Sweet It Is Without the Sugar: Delicious Desserts for Diabetics and Others (Paperback)
I can not believe how wonderful these desserts taste. It is incredible that no artifical sweetners were added. Not only are these receipes good for our health but, they are low in fat. That is a big plus considering we are always watching our weight. Definitely 5 star all the way!

How Sweet It Is...Without The Sugar is a superb cookbook specifically designed for diabetics and dieters who must avoid high caloric sweeteners that traditionally make desserts taste good, but cause blood sugar levels to soar dangerously. Jean C. Wade, herself a diabetic, provides a fructose-based alternative sweetener for every recipes; includes easy-to-read charts for Equivalent Sugar Substitute Measurements; helpfully breaks down each recipe into its nutritional components per service (including calories, carbohydrates, protean, sugars, total fat, and sodium); and lists diabetic exchanges for every recipe. From Chocolate-Custard Cake, Nutty Apple Brownies, and Nectarine Bottom-Crust Cobbler, to Fresh Strawberry Pie, Flavored Sweetened Whipped Cream, Fruit Jam Roll-Ups, and Cinnamon Tortilla Shells, How Sweet It Is...Without The Sugar will prove a popular and much utilized cookbook for the diabetic and the dieter's kitchen shelf collection.

Sinfully tasty, yet healthy desserts for the diabetic,
By Theresa Manley (Pennsylvania, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How Sweet It Is Without the Sugar: Delicious Desserts for Diabetics and Others (Paperback)
This wonderful volume is long overdue. The recipes are simple and easy to follow for the novice chef. Wonderful substitutes for sugar are plentiful within the pages of this book. The desserts are truly delectable. It is easy to forget that they are sugar-free. Whether you are a diabetic or not, limiting the excess sugar in your diet is a sensible thing to do. Thankfully, this cookbook makes life a little easier and enjoyable for those of us who must limit our sugar intake but still want to partake of a little goody now and then.

This cookbook is one of the few that I've actually read from cover to cover. I couldn't wait to fix the Chocolate Raspberry Cream Cheese Pie. It was marvelous. I liked the (Note) connected with this one. Divine and decadent indeed! I just had to have a second slice and I could, because I'm not a diabetic. I'm just one of those people that don't want to use sugar. Along with all the wonderful sounding recipes that I intend to fix, the book has a homey feel to it interspersed with humor. I think everyone should take a look at this one.

This cookbook is absolutely wonderful. The recipes are easy to follow and come out perfect. They taste scrumptious and are good for you too! I'm not a diabetic, but I will continue to use this cookbook for all my desserts. Jean has a winner with this book. I give it two thumbs up and a 5 star rating!

Loaded with White Flour!,

This review is from: How Sweet It Is Without the Sugar: Delicious Desserts for Diabetics and Others (Paperback)
I was shocked this cookbook was loaded with white flour in most of the recipes. We all know that white flour turns to sugar and spikes your blood sugar. Very disappointed in this cookbook. I haven't made 1 recipe because of the white flour. I'm getting rid of this cookbook.
