Book Description

November 1, 2005
Anticipating how kids react to paintings by artists as diverse as Botticelli, Vermeer, Degas, Chagall, and Pollack, this resource for adults who want children to love and understand art prepares them for the types of questions kids ask. Providing parents and teachers with valuable tips for making any visit to a museum with children a success, this guide offers a great primer or refresher course on art history, allowing adults to confidently answer common questions, such as why some paintings are signed and others are not, some pictures are small and others are very large, and why the Dutch paint so much fruit. Questions and answers about 30 well-known paintings provide historical background, explain genres such as still life and portrait, and demystify religious and mythological themes. Color-coded tabs let adults flip to sections appropriate to the ages of their children (5–7 years, 8–10 years, 11–13+ years).

4.0 out of 5 stars How to Talk to Children About Art, January 9, 2007

This review is from: How to Talk to Children About Art (Paperback)
My son is teaching 2nd and 3rd grade students art for 6 weeks. It is an internship program through the university he attends, with his major being in art. He has so much art knowledge, but needed to tailor it to be understandable for the kids' level. This book has given him some great information on how to do just that and he's looking at implementing several of the suggestions and projects.

I found this book quite informative with many practical suggestions. It gives specific ideas for each age group, sample questions, etc. It also gives age appropriate definitions for words used in discussing art, like landscape, portrait, old masters, and others. A great book for parents or educators.

5.0 out of 5 stars Changed my appreciation of art, November 25, 2009

This review is from: How to Talk to Children About Art (Paperback)
I don't know much about art, had no art appreciation classes in school. So when I would go to art museums, I never really got it. I was one of those who thought, "what's so great about that, my 4 year old daughter could have painted it". I have tried to read college level art appreciation books, but found them so boring, I couldn't stay awake. I bought this for my daughter but I, myself, have gotten much more out of it. A children's book about art was the perfect pace for me, it taught me on the level I needed, the very basics. This book has completely changed how I look at art and now I love to go to museums. I have given several copies to family and friends. Now I look at art books with my daughter all the time. She loves museums.
