1.0 out of 5 stars silly, January 23, 2009
By Kirsten G. Cutler (Santa Rosa, California) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Greven, Alec. How to Talk to Girls. Illustrations by Kei Acedera. Collins. 2008.

Even if this book is intended to be funny, it is not because it perpetuates stereotypical ideas, "girls win most of the arguments and have most of the power" and "It is easy to spot pretty girls because they have the big earrings, fancy dresses, and all the jewelry." The follow-up statement, "the best choice for most boys is a regular girl" is unfortunate: the implication that a regular girl is not pretty, or a pretty girl is not regular is not a healthy one for young children to read. A tip like, "To get a girl to like you, talk to her and get to know her" is great advice, why couldn't the book have more of this kind of straight talk? Instead more unfortunate comments follow: "If the girl you like is wild, then act just like her. This is hardly good advice. "It is also good to give gifts" is counsel that supports our already over materialistic culture. This silly book written by a nine year old boy is exploitative as is all the hoopla from the media.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fun, but not worth all the hype, January 20, 2009
My sister bought this for her son. She thought it was hilarious. I was surprised that so many people were paying for this. I have an 8YO too and he writes cute things sometimes too, as does every 8 year old. This is a lot of 8YO common sense. It is cute, I just don't think it merits all the attention that it is getting. The kid has a lot of good ideas and the illustrations are amusing, but they are nothing special. If I had my son and all of his classmates spend a little time writing about something that was important to them or that they felt could help other people, I could get a good book out of each one. Maybe that's a good idea...

5.0 out of 5 stars Men and Boys, January 6, 2009
I purchased the book "How to talk to Girls" for all the men in my family. From age 11 up to 62, they all enjoyed it and agreed that it was 100% accurate! The ladies in our family enjoyed it also. I would recomend this book to all males, from the youngest to the oldest, great advice and good reminders to the older ones who have forgotten!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Precocious little twerp
This kid is a precocious know-nothing twerp. I highly doubt he's ever written anything. He's being exploited by his worthless parents because of his "cute little smile". Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute!
I bought this book for a guy friend of mine and he thought it was a "cute" book (his word, not mine). Overall, it makes a funny (and not offensive) gag gift.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not appropriate
I doubt very much that this kid wrote this book. I bought it for my 8YO and it is totally NOT appropriate for that age, much older and then as a joke. Read more
