1.0 out of 5 stars silly, January 23, 2009

Greven, Alec. How to Talk to Girls. Illustrations by Kei Acedera. Collins. 2008.

Even if this book is intended to be funny, it is not because it perpetuates stereotypical ideas, "girls win most of the arguments and have most of the power" and "It is easy to spot pretty girls because they have the big earrings, fancy dresses, and all the jewelry." The follow-up statement, "the best choice for most boys is a regular girl" is unfortunate: the implication that a regular girl is not pretty, or a pretty girl is not regular is not a healthy one for young children to read. A tip like, "To get a girl to like you, talk to her and get to know her" is great advice, why couldn't the book have more of this kind of straight talk? Instead more unfortunate comments follow: "If the girl you like is wild, then act just like her. This is hardly good advice. "It is also good to give gifts" is counsel that supports our already over materialistic culture. This silly book written by a nine year old boy is exploitative as is all the hoopla from the media.

I am a middle school, high school teacher. I have read this book to several classes, and they love it. It is a jumping off point for their own feelings and makes a great writing assignment for them as well.
It's rare when kids ask you to read a book to them over and over.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fun, but not worth all the hype, January 20, 2009
This review is from: How to Talk to Girls (Hardcover)
My sister bought this for her son. She thought it was hilarious. I was surprised that so many people were paying for this. I have an 8YO too and he writes cute things sometimes too, as does every 8 year old. This is a lot of 8YO common sense. It is cute, I just don't think it merits all the attention that it is getting. The kid has a lot of good ideas and the illustrations are amusing, but they are nothing special. If I had my son and all of his classmates spend a little time writing about something that was important to them or that they felt could help other people, I could get a good book out of each one. Maybe that's a good idea...
