Greven, Alec. How to Talk to Girls. Illustrations by Kei Acedera. Collins. 2008.
Even if this book is intended to be funny, it is not because it perpetuates stereotypical ideas, "girls win most of the arguments and have most of the power" and "It is easy to spot pretty girls because they have the big earrings, fancy dresses, and all the jewelry." The follow-up statement, "the best choice for most boys is a regular girl" is unfortunate: the implication that a regular girl is not pretty, or a pretty girl is not regular is not a healthy one for young children to read. A tip like, "To get a girl to like you, talk to her and get to know her" is great advice, why couldn't the book have more of this kind of straight talk? Instead more unfortunate comments follow: "If the girl you like is wild, then act just like her. This is hardly good advice. "It is also good to give gifts" is counsel that supports our already over materialistic culture. This silly book written by a nine year old boy is exploitative as is all the hoopla from the media.

I am a middle school, high school teacher. I have read this book to several classes, and they love it. It is a jumping off point for their own feelings and makes a great writing assignment for them as well.
It's rare when kids ask you to read a book to them over and over.

Fun, but not worth all the hype,
This review is from: How to Talk to Girls (Hardcover)
My sister bought this for her son. She thought it was hilarious. I was surprised that so many people were paying for this. I have an 8YO too and he writes cute things sometimes too, as does every 8 year old. This is a lot of 8YO common sense. It is cute, I just don't think it merits all the attention that it is getting. The kid has a lot of good ideas and the illustrations are amusing, but they are nothing special. If I had my son and all of his classmates spend a little time writing about something that was important to them or that they felt could help other people, I could get a good book out of each one. Maybe that's a good idea...

I bought this for my classroom. I teach 6th grade. The kids practically line up waiting for their turn to be able to read this book. A very quick and funny read but well worth it.

Did he really even write this,

Given to my cousin as a gift... I had the displeasure to read it first. All stereotypes - and with words , phrases and and various amounts of sentence structure far beyond someone of his age, I honestly think his mother wrote much of this 'book' - Not worth the hype .. period.

My 11 year old grandson's solution to getting a girlfriend,

How to Talk to Girls What a book for an 11 year old who can not understand why girls are the way they are. Trying to find a girlfriend has been challenging for my 6th grade grandson. This adorable, honest book that is actually written by a child who has had his share of heartache :) certainly shows how fickle finding love is no matter what age. My grandson was THRILLED over this book.

Cute little book. Best to keep in mind that this book is written from a young person's viewpoint. Makes a good gift for a shy male (of any age).

Not appropriate,

I doubt very much that this kid wrote this book. I bought it for my 8YO and it is totally NOT appropriate for that age, much older and then as a joke. Too bad someone didn't write that in a review BEFORE I purchased this book, it's a waste of money.

Firstly, I've read A LOT of dating books from the masters David DeAngelo, Mystery and Stile. For those who don't know about them - look them up.
Not only are they 100% effective in the psychology of dating (I've tried it first hand and it works amazingly). Not only that but this kid has it down pat. Hes a natural who "sees" exactly how to play the game. This is the simple, powerful guide to dating. Anyone who says otherwise probably has no idea. You are a gifted young man and you can do anything you wish with your future. Great work ethic, great insights, great book. Well done. I bought your book and girls already think its really cute that I'm reading it. And guess what? They agree with everything you say to. You're the man. Don't let it go to your head though!

Men and Boys,
This review is from: How to Talk to Girls (Hardcover)
I purchased the book "How to talk to Girls" for all the men in my family. From age 11 up to 62, they all enjoyed it and agreed that it was 100% accurate! The ladies in our family enjoyed it also. I would recomend this book to all males, from the youngest to the oldest, great advice and good reminders to the older ones who have forgotten!!
