Doman's books are a must read, and you should start with this one.
After you read it, read the How to Teach Math (much easier to do the program because you can purchase an inexpensive kit from the author's institute). If you are into it, read Encyclopedic knowledge.
I also recommend you to take the author's courses, in Philadelphia, but they are a couple of thousand dollars or more. Do it all before your baby is born.
I read this book 10 years before my wife got pregnant and it changed my life... and my daughter's (I hope). It changed how I saw child's development. Now she is 3.
But don't get too carried away. Believe me, some parents do get carried away. The ones in Philadelphia seem to belong to a sect. Just enjoy your children and add this program to the fun.
Although I spend a large amount of money with the course, I really don't do much of the program. Still, I raise my daughter differently from what I would otherwise have done without having read this book. You will not be the same person after you read it. And it is not about teaching your baby to read. It is about teaching your baby about life.
You will have more respect for your child and will not let your baby grow "by accident." Instead, you will be able to actively participate in the learning process and challenge your child to fulfill his or her intellectual potential. If you have a child, or if you don't but you love someone, this is the only book that you must read. Remember, read it before the baby is born. This book (or the others in the collection) are a wonderful present for an expecting mother.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Babies Are Eager To Read, July 24, 2005
By
Maxim Masiutin (Chisinau, Republic of Moldova) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: How To Teach Your Baby To Read: The Gentle Revolution (Paperback)
This book provides the explanation of the Glenn Doman's theory of development of a baby's brain from child, argues about common myths of teaching babies, and provides many case studies of the method.

Initially I was skeptical about teaching my 18-month daughter to read, but found out that that Glenn Doman and Janet Doman have discovered the completely different method of teaching babies, not the same that is using in junior schools. Their method suits for a baby from zero moths old, i.e. from birth. The are three lessons per day, each lesson last fifteen seconds and give such a joy to the baby that she woke me up in the mornings asking me to teach her to read. When she hears my steps when I return from my job, she runs to me to teach her to read. The babies CAN and WANT to learn!

The babies are eager to learn, they want desperately to learn everything they can, as quickly as possible, but the adults are often fail to provide for the babies the adequate opportunity of learning.

Glenn Doman and Janet Doman offer funny and inexpensive way of teaching the baby to read, math, and encyclopedic knowledge by means of special inventory. For reading, it is cards with big red printed words.

A few words from my own experience on producing the inventory: don't even imagine of cutting the cards and printing the words by yourself. Just give a list of words to a nearby company, which prints business cards.

I also recommend "How to Teach Your Baby to Be Physically Superb" by Glenn Doman in addition to this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two Generations Have Learned To Read Using This Book, August 10, 2006
This review is from: How To Teach Your Baby To Read: The Gentle Revolution (Paperback)
My mother purchased a copy of this book in 1965 when I was an infant. Mom implemented Dr. Doman's gentle art of teaching and by the time I was two I was reading from Little Golden Books. It's no wonder the kindergarten teacher surprised I was reading at a 1st grade level at the age of 5 years.
Fast forward to the 21st Century, I am now a mom with an infant and I too decided to implement Dr. Doman's gentle art of teaching in our home and viola! Our child who is now 5 1/2 years is reading at a 2nd grade level.
The bottom line is the principles in this book really do work. The teaching method is gentle, easy to use and it is fun for both parent and child!

5.0 out of 5 stars Life-Changing!, April 26, 2007
This review is from: How To Teach Your Baby To Read: The Gentle Revolution (Paperback)
If you want to give your child the best gift money can buy, then start by reading this book. It is still amazing, still revolutionary. The concepts, although still debated by many, are among the most unique and original child instructional methods ever devised. It really is possible to teach a baby to read! I have taught children in preschools and kindergarten, using a variety of methods, but I keep coming back to this book. I have also read How to Teach Your Baby Math, How to Teach Your Baby Encyclopedic Knowledge, and How to Teach Your Baby to be Physically Superb. I have also read the profiles of the many children who graduated from the author's school( The Institutes). The part in this book, that grabbed my attention, was when Dr. Doman stated that "you can teach a child anything if you present it in an honest, factual way". I knew that children were capable of amazing things, but the results I achieved, and the parents talked about in this book, are nothing short of astounding! My favorite thing to teach, though, is encyclopedic knowledge. It is so much fun to hear a child call out 2-3 hundred breeds of dog, or species of bird by sight, and beg you to teach more. The most incredible thing that happened to me was when I was showing paintings of the greats,Leonardo, Picasso, etc., and after a few months, I brought out some new paintings by these artists, that the kids hadn't seen. Without giving any hints or supplying any info. about the paintings, I asked them who they thought painted the unknown masterpieces. They correctly called each artist by his painting! They had developed a sense of each artists' style. The ages of the children ranged from three to four years old. I highly recommend this life-changing book. By teaching your baby to read, you increase his joy of learning, his intelligence, and create a healthy bond between you and him for life.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent program, June 8, 2006
This review is from: How To Teach Your Baby To Read: The Gentle Revolution (Paperback)
This really works! It's NOT about drilling. It's about showing your child words frequently throughout the day for VERY short periods in a fun happy way right from the beginning. I think another reviewer mentioned that the author didn't mention reading aloud to your child, but honestly, folks, that's a given, right? This book was about a specific method to teach them to read. Not the obvious stuff that goes along with it. And the books they want you to use are your own homemade books that you make! About anything your child is interested in. My girls love this and my 4 year old is reading around a 6th grade level and my 1 1/2 year old can recognize and read a couple hundred different words and is beginning to figure out words that she hasn't even seen presented on cards before. This is so fun to do with your child and what a precious gift to give them.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Turned My Baby Son To Be A "Baby Genius". Dr. Doman, Thanks A Million!, April 29, 2006
This review is from: How To Teach Your Baby To Read: The Gentle Revolution (Paperback)

I was so lucky to read this book and 4 other books by the same author when my baby son was 9-mon, I spent 5 nights to read Doman's 5 books, and started to teach my son with Doman's method immediately. I started with 25 words and add 5 new words every day, 1 second per word, 3 times a day. To my surprise, my son absorbed every thing so quickly and after 3 weeks, he started pointing to the right objects so often when I showed him the word!

I attended Dr. Doman's "How to multiply your baby's intelligence" baby brain development course in his "The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential" in Philadelphia in order to meet those experts and little geniuses in person. The Institute is for both well babies and brain injured babies, which was founded by Doman 50 years ago. It is a non-profit organization. (www.iahp.org)

We saw all those 4-6 year-old kids and other 8-12 year-olds in their Institutes could read more than 3 languages, read many big thick books, do Math, science and encyclopedia, gymnastics, swim, play violin in almost professional high level!!! They were taught by their parents who most of them did not have any foreign languages and musical background and etc. Everybody in the class was astonished, thrilled and speechless; many were cried in the very formal graduation ceremony.

I started teaching my son reading when he was 9 months old. And the result was amazing. Three weeks later he could point to his name word when I say his name; and point to my bellybutton when I showed him the big word card: bellybutton. However, he lost interest of reading completely in 2 months when he can walk around. I had to stop my teaching for a while and search for methods that can intrigue his interest.

When he turned 18 months old, he can accurately name and read every part of the world map puzzle, he can read all other body and organ parts words and flower/tree parts words and other 1,000 words cards. When he is 21 months old, he can read dozens of children books. Now my son is 25 months old, I am starting teaching him the elementary curriculum for 10 to 20 minutes every day.

My son is just an ordinary child, if you think he is a GENIUS, then every baby is a GENIUS including your baby, as stated in Doman's theory, because every baby is able to read and do math if you prepare such an environment and opportunity for him to learn. And babies love to learn, it is fun and it is their surviving skill...

You do not need a college degree to be able to send your child to college or even Harvard, the love with all your heart to your child makes the real difference when you decide not taking the chance of winning a baby Einstein lottery that might be related to your family Genius Gene. Every hard effort you put to your baby, God knows, and your child knows.

Do not waste your baby's precious first 6 genius years! I highly recommend this book!

It might be too overwhelmed to spend weeks to cut and write hundreds of words cards and math cards, you can buy a set of "Teach your baby to read within one year kit" for $9.99 on eBay. You can type the keyword "Teach Your Baby to Read within 1 Year Kit / Montessori" on eBay to search for the kit and the relevant subjects' material.

5.0 out of 5 stars A joy for any parent, grandparent, or mentor !!!!!!, January 8, 2007
This review is from: How To Teach Your Baby To Read: The Gentle Revolution (Paperback)
I am a volunteer at an alternative school serving home based (home school) students. I have seen excellent results from parents applying the suggestions in this book to a 3, 4, and 5 year old and look forward to observing a parent use the suggestions with a newborn during the next four months.

I am developing a course titled "Creating Intelligence" and I plan to use some of the information in this book in the course.

From page 1 to 102 a definitive analysis shows why babies want to, should, and can learn to read and the problems children face if they can not read well when they get to school.

The key information on how to teach your baby is presented, step by step, from pages 102 to 157. The next chapter, pages 158 to 196 is divided into sections outlining specifically how to implement the program for different aged "babies". Thus it is fairly easy to implement the program regardless of the age of your "baby"(birth to six).

The approach in this book simply works, and works well. The company offers word cards and "bits of intelligence" cards, both worth the price. Babies and adults learn a lot from the "intelligence" cards. The "intelligence" cards are expensive, full color, and simply fantastic - but not required!

From the book, and from my own experience, it is clear that anyone not offering their "baby" the opportunity to read using this system (it is easier on the child than other programs) is certainly depriving the child, themselves and grandparents of a joyous experience.

A word of warning. The book suggests you use empty 6" high cards to put words on. However, if you have purchased any word cards from the company you will find they use 4" cards. The 4" cards are a lot easier to use than the 6" empty cards they sell. Buy your own 4" card stock cards, so they will fit with the 4" cards you purchased from the company. If you do not buy any cards from the company use 4" cards anyhow, they are easier to work with than 6" cards.

The company sells a video to go with the book. It is a good video that will help the reader understand the teaching concepts in the book. The video is not required to do a good job.

In the last three months I have purchased two of these books for others and recommend it to any person committed to spending the time needed to create intelligence.

This book provides all of the steps required to provide your pre-preschooler with a full and complete reading course which will have them recognizing words and patterns of written language in no time. We started with our son at age two and within a couple of months he was able to recognize at least 40 words and could put small sentences together. He loves to "do words". The learning process is fun and joyous for both child and parent and it really does work. I highly recommend this book to parents of babies and toddlers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Educator's Response, November 9, 2006
By
This review is from: How To Teach Your Baby To Read: The Gentle Revolution (Paperback)
I'm a retired teacher with experiences with many types of students and most school ages. I've taught children as young as three to read, procedures backed up by research.

The book "How to Teach Your Baby to Read" is superior to methods I've used for over forty years. I could find no flaws in the method or approach. The book is readable and the mother of an infant should be eager, if not inspired, to begin with her child. A father, like me, should be just as eager for his son or daughter to get ahead of the schools' programs.
