5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly How to
This is the only book I've found that tells you step by step how to do the many tricks listed, but also how to use the steps to get your dog to perform anything you want. My dog rolled over after 5 minutes on his 2nd try. And his methods are not cruel, by "correction" he means saying the word "no" or tugging on the leash a bit. No where in there does he mention...

Though long and drawn out, this book is not the end-all of dog trick books. I have a problem with his sometimes coercive methods, and the nature of some of the 'tricks' (like teaching your dog to snarl and growl over an object). 4.0 out of 5 stars How to Teach Your Dog to Talk..., June 29, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I thought this was a useful tool in teaching my new puppy some very fun and impressive tricks. Although she is not actually speaking English, I believe the book has improved our communication, and I'm speaking better Dog.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun and Variety!, February 20, 2001
This is a book that contains a wonderful variety of tricks for every type of dog. I espcially liked the appendix at the end that shows the tricks that are suitable for specific breeds. There are more tricks than you'll ever need for your dogs, and they work!!!

Though long and drawn out, this book is not the end-all of dog trick books. I have a problem with his sometimes coercive methods, and the nature of some of the 'tricks' (like teaching your dog to snarl and growl over an object). Not that you can't teach your dog to do anything you want, but he needs to be a whole lot clearer that any behavior that is rewarded will increase exponentially in frequency once it's been rewarded. Teaching your dog to object guard is not a safe thing to do in the hands of the average person. Aside from that, it seems quickly written and as if he tried to make it cover EVERYTHING. It is hard to do that well and he hasn't succeeded. His blurb on clicker training is silly, recommending (against the advice of every clicker trainer and those who invented the method) to click sometimes without treating. In short, head for a more concise, better written book if you'd like to have fun teaching your dog tricks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dog-Gone Good!, April 24, 2000
What a book...every family DOG should buy this for his/her owner! Written by the ever interesting and captivating "Cap" (Captain Haggerty), this is NOT a mere "trick book", but instead, a tool for keeping the excitement in dog training and ownership, and keeping boredom out! BUY IT!

4.0 out of 5 stars Speak, Fido!, January 31, 2008

This review is from: How to Teach Your Dog to Talk (Hardcover)
First, you should know that this book IS actually about teaching your dog to talk. Not in the foofy-bonding-spiritual way, but in the "this is how you encourage them to make this particular vowel sound" way. I was a little shocked -- but amused -- by this. I'm not really interested in teaching my dog to speak, but thankfully there are lot of other fun tricks in this book. I would recommend it to anyone that wants a decent (but sometimes rambling) read in addition to their list of tricks. I honestly like it much more than 101 Dog Tricks for the stories and humor.

1.0 out of 5 stars Great information....50 years ago., June 20, 2004

All the gushing reviews about this writer being the "father of dog training", or whatever, fail to mention that dog training has advanced by leaps and bounds in the past 40 or 50 years. So when a writer is using fairly cruel methods to train a dog ( and causing the dog needless pain and suffering ) most dog trainers that a) aren't 80 years old, or b) actually kept up with the changes in dog training, are going to rightly dicount using stone age training methods.
Welcome to the 1980's, readers - much better training methods ( and books ) exist now. Pass up this useless historic tome and spend your money on a book that works!

1.0 out of 5 stars If I could have given zero stars I would have!, February 25, 2009
This book is horrible. The book itself is hard to read and it offers no visuals to see if you are doing the tricks correctly. It offers no advice on how to teach your dog if they don't follow the book's steps exactly. Many of the tricks in the book are taught with cruel methods. For one trick the author recommends that you fill a paper bag with rice and rattle it while pretending to hit the dog and shouting at him to get out of the room. Wow. Dog training is supposed to be fun for the dog and a bonding time between owner and dog. These methods will quickly destroy that bond while making your dog a nervous wreck. Another tip was to shut your dog's leash in the door while the dog is riding in the car. This is a great way to severely damage your dog's head and neck if you are in an accident or even if you stop too fast. It bothers me that this book is out there and people that read it may follow the damaging advice. Skip this book! Save your money and enroll in a local positive training methods class instead.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not recommended!!!, October 1, 2000

There aren't many trick books out there, but I still wouldn't recommend this one. I didn't like the way he suggested getting the dogs to do stuff. Try Take a Bow Wow. It is Great!!!
