As a retired advertising agency copywriter, I've seen a gazillion of the "How to get rich writing copy" books, along with tales from some sham outfit in Florida boasting of "six-figure copywriters" and implying that anyone who buys their materials and reads through them will be living on luxurious islands surrounded by yachts and exotic drinks while pecking away on their laptops and earning ridiculous sums of money for each submission.

That's the fantasy painted by these snake-oil hacks. The reality is something entirely different, and "How They Did It" shows it clearly, concisely and with no fanfare.

Ms. Bocco picks a diverse group of freelance writers--probably the most diverse group I've ever seen in such a book--and lets THEM tell their own stories with no fluff, no BS, no hype. . . just straight talk.

Refreshing. Very refreshing.

The book is neither encouraging or discouraging, but rather something far more important: Informative and truthful.

Anyone who is considering a career in freelance writing or who is thinking of writing to supplement their income needs to buy and download this book, no questions asked. I saw virtually every discipline from ad copywriting to screenwriting to journalism represented and each writer gives refreshingly truthful insight to his or her own genre and specialty.

Ms. Bocco did well with this book and I gave her five-stars simply FOR having such a diverse group of writers represented.

(As far as the review here whining about a minute handful of typos? Ignore it. Ignore ALL of those kinds of reviews. I'm presently reading a Tom Clancy novel (earlier work) that I downloaded and halfway through, I've spotted well over two-dozen typos and formatting errors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Guide For Aspiring Writers April 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Diana's book covers the journeys of many people who have been able to succeed at earning a living through writing utilizing a variety of methods. I found it really interesting to read which websites they write for, types of books or articles they author as well as learn about the columns that they may run. I have done a lot of article writing over the years and this collection has sparked a number of ideas for me to be able to add to my income. By studying this guide, I am much more aware of many different websites that hire writers. There are some good tips on how people land their jobs and how to make contact with decision makers and editors.

It is very helpful to see each of their marketing strategies and I was thrilled to see a social worker that made the transition into freelance writing as that is my current profession. I found Jackie Giroux's answers to the question of the special qualities needed to be a successful writer very enlightening. There is a good section on how to avoid writing scams in the middle of the book, so don't skip that. For anyone looking for direction and inspiration to succeed at writing in a part-time or full-time capacity, this book will give you lots of ideas and angles to pursue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Filled with great ideas July 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is one of the first books I have bought for my Kindle and it seems like I picked a winner.
I found myself rushing back to read it because it's just filled with so many great ideas - I was highlighting like crazy and am just about to sit down and schedule some of those ideas I highlighted.
Inspirational, practical and quite fascinating - this is an excellent read and well worth getting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite a unique book April 8, 2012

This was a new type of book for me. It is a series of interviews with different people who make a living writing. They are freelance writers and bloggers. The all answer the same set of questions. The answers are pretty insightful and I thought they were great to read.

Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a freelance writer? These interviews will show you. The authors in this book show you that it is not all fun and games as some of us think. It is hard work but very rewarding. I would recommend anyone considering a quitting their job to become a freelancer read this first to see what to expect.

3.0 out of 5 stars could be better... too many typos April 2, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I picked up this ebook for free.... so for the price, if you are like me and interested in writing to make extra money or maybe a full time income, go ahead a grab it if it's stil free. But honestly, there are several of this type of "author interview... how I write or started writing" kinds of books, and this is not the best of them simply because it has so many typos! I mean come ON was it proofed? Its also pretty obvious that this was not done in person or over the phone... just a questionare filled out and sent in... Lastly, the majority of the authors interviewed are not making at least what I would call, a living.... Many of them are married woman and this is a second income.... and NO theres nothing wrong with that and I dont wish to take a thing away from it! BUT, I was hoping to read about people making a decent full time income....
Bottom line.... if its free or .99.... ok maybe its worth it.... I wouldn't pay more.... Honestly If its not free there are better versions of this idea....
