4.0 out of 5 stars Finished It In A Matter of Hours...
First, if you're looking for a fast read and a light topic (such as a beach read), this would be the winner. It's refreshing to have the male perspective of confusion, fear, heartache, frustration (the list can go on and on) when it comes to relationships. First, if you're looking for a fast read and a light topic (such as a beach read), this would be the winner. It's refreshing to have the male perspective of confusion, fear, heartache, frustration (the list can go on and on) when it comes to relationships. Although quite predictable, the storyline is still a page turner and was very difficult to put down. It's a light topic of discussion which still allows for self reflection of your own relationship(s). I'm definitely looking forward to future releases by the author.

Nice plot, solid story. Hilarious at times, never boring. The author has a nice, flowing style and a lot of room for growth. I'll definitely keep an eye out for future releases.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad but not exceptional, December 7, 2011
The story was predictable, but so is about 95% of everything in fiction these days, so that's not necessarily a problem. The main reason for the lukewarm review is the writing was at times clumsy. The author was metaphor-happy, which, when done well, can be very rich, enjoyable reading. But the style was very direct, man-brain, and sarcastic, and then every other page a lengthy, earnest metaphor was plopped into the middle, totally without finesse. It was as if he learned a new trick and had to show it off over and over; it got tiresome. Other than this weird style flipping, the voice was consistent and reasonably enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant!, April 10, 2011
This review is from: How To Disappear Completely (Kindle Edition)
I have never written a review before but I feel effectively compelled to write about this book. The characters, romance, and comedy are so real and entertaining that I knew I couldn't put the book down after reading the first paragraph. And I didn't. This book engagingly describes with complete honesty what it is like as a 20 something living with the pain of a dying relationship, the ecstasy of new love, and the confusion on what to do next. I have been looking for a book like this for years. Books like this have come close, but never have I read something with just honesty and humor. The joy and awkwardness of new love is described perfectly with the characters in full 3 dimensional form. I will be googling this author weekly to find new content because this is the next Dave Eggers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected, March 11, 2011
This review is from: How To Disappear Completely (Kindle Edition)
A randomly picked book- downloaded on a whim- that I had no expectation of particularly enjoying, turned into a compulsive need to keep reading.

Never dull, and hitting all the right spots, I have not been so engrossed in a book since Battlefield Earth.

To not relate to this book is to say you have never loved, never lusted, never been crushed, and have lived under a rock.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Story, Average Writing, January 14, 2010
This review is from: How To Disappear Completely (Kindle Edition)
The story grabbed my attention and the main character reminded me a bit of Holden Caulfield but with less depth and character. The story was definitely not boring, but nothing we haven't seen before in other books or on television; it was very predictable. The writing was average -- it reminded me of most of the stories my college creative writing classmates would write.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny look at relationships, December 29, 2009
This review is from: How To Disappear Completely (Kindle Edition)
I really enjoyed this book - it's a story of ending and starting relationships from a male perspective; the main male character deals with some drastic changes. The writing style is easy-going and humorous with a well paced plot. There are some great comedic scenes thrown in - the dog scenes and Starbucks scenes are hilarious! I laughed out loud several times at the funny scenes that happen and funny lines that the main protagonist says.

The book is set in Boston, MA, and there are several locations thrown in to the storyline. I've been to Boston for a week long visit so I wasn't familiar with all the locations. If you're more familiar with the city I'm sure you'll enjoy the geographical references. The main character is interested in music (hence the title of the book) and writing reviews of music gigs. There are references to music throughout the book, a bonus if you are interested in music too.

This is Bowick's first book and I'll be keeping an eye out for future work by him. Recommended as a well written and easy to read humorous book with a good plot.

I enjoyed this book immensely. The protagonist does and says things most normal mortals only ever dream about. Very entertaining and excellent sense of dark humor!
