Editorial Reviews

Review

“When looking for wisdom on big questions, I turn to either the Bible or Red Green.
Ken Gallinger, Ethically Speaking columnist, Toronto Star

"[H]ilarious, satirical and smart. . . .Some of the advice--such as [Smith's] tips on surviving marriage--is wiser and more honest than anything you'll read in a real so-called self-help book."
The Globe and Mail

"Thankfully . . . Steve Smith is as crafty with words as he is with DIY home renovations."
Toronto Life

"For those suffering from Possum Lodge withdrawal--fear not, because Red's back and he's written the ultimate do-it-yourself and self-help manual all rolled into one."
— Canoe.ca

About the Author

RED GREEN is the leader of Possum Lodge, Chapter 11, a northern Ontario eyesore. He is friendly, inventive, cheap and as honest as the day is long, which means he's the least honest on December 21. When he works on his handyman projects, Red is not stupid, he's impatient. So he uses duct tape to "buy time." Red Green is the star of The Red Green Show, which had first runs in Canada and the US from 1991 until 2006, making it the longest running live-action scripted comedy in the world. It continues to be enormously popular in reruns here and in the States. Red Green is the creation of Canadian comedian and writer Steve Smith.

Artist Red Green has previously illustrated his own poetry books, which he kept carefully hidden until it was agreed he could do the illustrations for this book. Photographer Red Green's discovery that a professional might charge upwards of a hundred dollars led him to the decision to take the damn pictures in this book himself.

I just bought this book for my father who is a big Red Green fan as well as I. It arrived last night and I took it out of the box and just randomly opened it up and began reading. I was laughing so hard I was crying. Granted I am a female and may have a little different perspective than the average male reader but if you are a fan of Red Green it is the same thing you are used to just put down on paper. The sections in the book are short and make it easy to read. I think I am going to have to add this to my Christmas list now!

I'm not handsome, but the women will find me handy now thanx to Red! This book is so funny I'm laughing so hard on every page; it's taking forever to read, but that's ok. That means I can laugh more over a longer period of time. EVERYBODY should get this book. It's a riot and a book that will really make your day, or month, or year. Whatever that means.

I'm not a heavy reader, but I started reading the book as soon as it arrived the other week. It's a very cleverly written book, with descriptions one could only expect from Steve Smith and his friends. For me, it is better to actually watch the pranks and mishaps on the tube, but this book gives one the opportunity to visualize what's in print. All in all, I wasn't disappointed with the book, even though there are a few so-so parts. I really wish the program was still on TV, but for now, I'll use this book as a pick-me-up when I'm a bit down. RIP Wayne Robson, AKA Mike Hamar!

My husband and I read this to each other on a recent trip, and often laughed out loud. We laughed so hard sometimes that we cried. Other times the person reading wasn't able to finish the paragraph or thought, as they started laughing. His suggested solutions to common challenges and the sarcasm are very funny! WE loved it so much that we purchased a copy for my father, who owned his own construction company for years. He told us that he read the first chapter and was laughing out loud. The whole book isn't that way, but there are plenty of opportunities for laughter.

When considering this book, the question isn't "Should I buy it?" or even "Is it funny?" The question is "How can one man fill each page with SO MANY funny things? Dave Barry did it in the Eighties and Nineties and Red Green owns the Two Thousands.
Any and every man will love this book and if you KNOW a man and want to know what is going through his little head, this is the book for you.
A great read and one that deserves to be picked up and put back in the bathroom time and time again.

This was a gift for my husband who became a huge fan of Red Green while living in Canada....and he loves this book. He couldn't stop laughing and reading little tidbits to me---and yes, there are some very helpful tips to be learned from Red Green. My favorite (so far) are things not to say to the bride :) If you get this book you will not be disappointed!

I'm profoundly overwhelmed. To put it another way, I'm speechless. And yes, it doesn't take much to overwhelm me.

This was my first Red Green book that I have read, and frankly it is hard to read it without hearing his voice reading off the words. It's that accurate to the show's feel.

This was a very enjoyable read, but I had to read some, put it down, return to it later. Not that it was a hard read, just imagine watching 5 hours of only the Handyman's Corner and you will get what I mean.

Having said that... if you area fan you must read this book. The part about what do with your old lawnmower had me on the floor. It is definitely a funny read, but as usual he also touches on some good points if you look for them.
