About the Author

Stephen Pidgeon is a former McKinsey consultant and is currently Associate Director in the Career Development Office at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, which is consistently ranked amongst the World’s top Business Schools.

In his role at Tuck, Stephen helps students get internships and full time positions in all of the World’s top consulting companies; including McKinsey & Company, Bain & Company, The Boston Consulting Group, Deloitte Consulting, and many more.

Each year, Stephen counsels more than a hundred students, helping them navigate the on-campus recruiting process, and coaching them to succeed in consulting case and experience interviews.

In addition, Stephen is one of the most sought-after interview coaches on Evisors.com, where he coaches students from around the World (including undergrad, MBA and other advanced degrees) and experienced hires.

Prior to working at Tuck, Stephen was an Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Company, based in the London office, during which time he served top leaders of many global organizations. He was particularly active as an interviewer, attending company presentations on campuses, mentoring candidates, and taking part in countless interviews and decision meetings.

Stephen received his MBA from the Tuck School of Business in 2007, where he successfully navigated the consulting recruiting process, receiving offers from two of the top consulting firms. He spent his summer internship with McKinsey & Company.

Stephen lives in Vermont with his wife and two daughters, and when he is not counseling students spends his time renovating his house or cutting down trees in his backyard.

I also suggest pairing this with a case interview book.

As an incoming MBA student with a non-traditional background this book was incredibly informative. Stephen lays out the entire consulting landscape - from the summer before your first year of school, through the intense recruiting process, all the way through the (hopeful) offer signing process. The book answered all of my questions - even ones that I didn't know I had. The book is straightforward, honest, and written from someone who really knows what he is talking about (Stephen went through the process himself, landed a job at McKinsey, worked on the recruiting side of McKinsey, and now works for Tuck helping to prep students for this process). A must read for rising MBA students interested in entering the consulting profession.

Full disclosure - I'm a student at the Tuck School of Business who had the good fortune to have Stephen as one of my career advisers.

This book lays out everything in the recruiting process and does it with a great mix of insight into the recruiter's mind and practical tips for the applicant. What it is not is a case interview book and I loved that. It gives fantastic tips on how to navigate a networking event with a consulting firm and also lays out the good and the bad of a day in the life of a consultant. Read it as early as possible in the recruiting process.

A transition is never easy, let alone jumping from academic bench science into management consulting.
I have a life sciences background, currently a PhD candidate in Microbiology & Immunology. I had the fortune of reading this book by Stephen Pidgeon, and found it extremely helpful in designing, paving, and walking the path in seeking a career in management consulting. Although specific descriptions and testimonies geared towards an MBA student were rather distant in relevance, I greatly appreciated his wisdom and advice in preparatory work and networking, but also in revealing the industry to an inexperienced academic like myself.

I would recommend this easy, helpful read for anyone - not just MBAs - seeking/considering a career in management consulting. Knowing is half the battle, and this book certainly does the trick.

Absolutely loved the book. As someone just beginning to explore the consulting field, this is a great starting point. Stephen does a great job of structuring the book. He begins by demystifying what it actually means to be a consultant (which in my opinion is the most important part of the book). Then, he takes the reader into the shoes of the recruiter and the consultants/partners helping in the recruiting process. This is extremely valuable because it allows you to enter the recruiting process with a consultant's mindset. By this, I mean that you are able to view the firm you are applying to as a "client" so to speak. This will give you a huge leg up on the competition. While others are stressing about parts of the interview process that don't matter, you come in to the recruiting process with a plan, ready to execute. This is your go to book for getting all things consulting. Before confusing yourself on company websites, read this book first to help you understand how to get where you want to be.

I'm a 1Y MBA student. I have read many consulting books prior to B-school. Stephen Pidgeon's book is one of the best. I highly recommend it. I only regret not reading this before I came to B-school.

Even if you're not pursing an MBA, I recommend it because it explores all of the important details outside of the case interview that I cannot find anywhere else. There is also a good section dedicated to case interviews, which I love. The language is clear and it's a fun and informative read.

This book provides an outstanding overview of the role of consulting firms and their standard processes for recruitment. I am from a non-traditional background for consulting but am strongly considering a transition into the field. This book was invaluable in helping me to formulate expectations and understand how to best prepare. This should be the first book you read when considering consulting!

This book covers everything else that is part of the consulting recruiting process besides the case interview. All of the little things--from cocktail hours and the other "non-evaluative" parts of the process, to what you should expect as a consultant--are covered in detail. I was able to use this book as my sole non-case interview source.

I just finished reading this book.
I am amazed at how thoroughly it walks you through the entire consulting story, yet in a very simple fashion - to the point, clear and concise.
Coming from a non-traditional background and going for MBA this fall, the book really helped me gain insights into one of the most sought after careers.
I would recommend this book to anyone - whether or not you want to enter Consulting arena. After all, better understanding leads to better(or different) planning!
