1.0 out of 5 stars Common Sense Advice That Doesn't Need Retelling April 20, 2011
Format:Turtleback
My husband bought me this book to help me on social outings with his clients. I have a tendency to be shy, but he thought maybe this would help my conversation skills. I tried to explain that I'd read Emily Post, but he thought he was being nice so I chose to read it out of politeness.

As another reviewer pointed out, there are many inaccuracies or ridiculous opinions within the book. The author actually thinks that Kate Moss has natural style. I would think getting caught doing cocaine on camera is not stylish or ladylike! Probably most of Kate's style could be attributed to a team of stylists that get her ready for the camera. There is also a whole section devoted to wearing heels, which I'm sure many podiatrists would be excited to read. True, they can make legs look great, but are not necessary for most occasions or when you're 5'11, as am I. Also, no one kisses strangers in Scandinavia, but they definitely do in Italy. She pointed out that a handshake is most appropriate in U.S. and European cultures, but then only listed Western countries when being more specific on greetings. Maybe she should have thought of some place like Mexico, when siting examples, where it's very rude to not kiss when greeting.

Additionally, the book is rather pompous in tone and seems to think that all modern women need a lecture on how to act. It's easy to blame younger generations for failing to live up to our morals and standards, but perhaps we should learn to accept that the world is continually evolving.

As for me, social anxiety will not be conquered by ridiculous expectations, so perhaps this book is not for me. Maybe if it could talk for me I'd have the privilege of fitting in with all the pinky and nose in the air crowd.

I bought this book hoping for something quite in depth that would give me advice on conduct in different situations. However I really didn't feel like it delivered, and it came across as a little superficial.

All of its suggestions were obvious and I didn't learn much from it. I wouldn't recommend anyone who had been brought up with any social sense at all to buy this book. You will get better advice from your girlfriends!!!

I'm a little disappointed as most of rules are pretty basic and common sense.
It is nicely presented but really of little substance.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disapointing. March 2, 2010
By S. Otto
Format:Turtleback
Good idea, bad advice.

I picked up this book expecting the perfect little handbook on life, but I found some of the advice to be just plain wrong.

For example, in the first chapter it is suggested that one should "Ask about jobs, vacations..." "Jobs" can be a difficult subject to speak on, what if the person is unemployed? What if they do something you consider embarrassing, boring, immoral or repugnant? Exotic dancer, proctologist or butcher come to mind.

Under how to sit in a skirt (pg 45) the author suggests what she calls "the double leg-cross." in which the skirt wearer first crosses her legs at the nee and then at the ankle. First and most importantly, you have to have super skinny legs in order to pull this off. Secondly a lady never crosses her legs!

There were many more examples of bad advice, this is just two that I know of for certain. I have to ask, what else is wrong?
