I just read Winning at Interviews by Alan Jones and found this book, Negotiate your Salary to be a great companion book to that one - I would suggest reading Winning at Interviews first and as you get closer to the hiring process start reading Negotiate your Salary. Learn what you must do in this new economy to be competitive but not go overboard, what to expect, what to ask for and how to get it. You have to speak up for yourself, you can only get paid as much as you ask for - give examples and reasons why you are worth what you are asking and be sure to follow through. Going above and beyond goes a long way especially when the competition is breathing down your neck to try and get that same job and possible for less money!

Alan Jones delivers a funny, poignant, and very enjoyable book that is critical for anyone who is looking to negotiate a better package before signing on the dotted line (which, if you follow Alan's advice, is EVERYONE looking to start a new job/change jobs!). I've taken whole courses on negotiation before in business school, but none were as useful or effective as Alan's book (which even gives you great ideas on precisely what to say and when, as well as what NOT to say). Very, very useful book!
