Emily Pruitt has been around dogs for quite a while and has written several books about dogs. "How to Train a Puppy" offers some fundamental but most important training tactics for your puppy. It's no secret that puppies require diligent training by their owners, and the rewards are great for those who follow through. This book covers several of the basic trainings that one would want to accomplish with their puppies starting with the most necessary one, potty training.

Many people struggle with their puppy training as they raise their voices, and sometimes even their hand to their young dog, but Emily teaches how to do it so easily while making it a fun interaction between puppy and owner.

Thank you, Emily, for your training of the people! I like the photos in the book, too. Good job!

I know this is "how to train a puppy", but my puppy is 10 months old. I got the book and am applying the leash training, sit and lay to my dog. I wasn't holding out much hope because my dog is much older than a puppy, but I am pleasantly happy with the progress. Up to this point, I have never gotten mad at my dog for his learning speed because I am more at fault for having waited so long. The techniques in this book follow right along with my personality and my beliefs in how to treat a pet. Thank you for the book and I'm glad I didn't ignore the book just because my dog is almost a year old.

AH AH and NO give the dog NO information about what TO DO. I use a positive approach and NO corrections when training dogs - especially puppies! You simply have to make what you want them to do be fun and rewarding for them. And I disagree that it is a given that puppies will pee and poop in your house - my last 3 dogs did not have a single accident in the house until they were at the end of life and with physical/health issues. Never a puppy accident! Pee pads? YUK. I want to teach my dogs from the start where I want them to go. Not to have pee pads in my house.

Also - there is a difference between training a dog to come and REWARDING it with a treat - and holding a treat while yelling COME! When teaching dogs with bribes of food, you end up with a dog who does the behavior you are teaching simply for the treat.

Let's get the dog to choose to do - with JOY - what you want him to do - not physically help him into a "down" position or hold food in front of you to get him to come.

I would recommend 7 Days To a Perfect Puppy by Sophia Yin and many other books - but not this one. It CAN be done in 7 days. It doesn't have to take a month to potty train. Or take your puppy to a positive reinforcement puppy class!

Our puppy is just about there. We have followed most of your advise about potty training and I am happy to tell you that our "little angel" is having fewer and fewer accidents in the house everyday and yesterday there was none. We have been trying to stay on top it like you suggest and it is working. Have been working on the sit as well and she is doing pretty well with that also. Just wanted to say thanks.

Great, easy to read book with all the right information you need to train your puppy. Some of it you already know, but the extras that you don't know make the book worth the price.
The most important part, is that it really lays it all out for you to follow. If you follow this advise, you will have a well trained puppy and anyone with a new puppy knows they really need to be trained.
